I need some help if possible..... I have a 1993 Cadillac Allante that is in pretty good shape. It only has 65K miles and the body is perfect. The problem is the dash. It has cracked, buckled and all but put its feet up in air and died! The top of the dash is integrated with the rest of the dash so it is not a simple replacement. Anyway, without some kind of repair this car is basically worthless and new ones are next to impossible to find. If one could find one, it would run over $1,000. I have all but given up on having it repaired as I am told that it is not a simple task. If you have any ideas I would be appreciative. Now for the help... I have found one in upstate New York from a car that had 28K on it. Supposedly it is in excellent condition. The problem is the shipping charges. I am told that it has to go on a skid and that it will run in excess of $210 to ship it to San Diego. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could have it shipped to San Diego in a more economical fashion? Any ideas you may have would be appreciated. The total cost with shipping, if I pay $210, would be close to $800 which seems kind of high. I think that the seller, an auto parts yard, would be a bit flexible but I am still trying to figure out how to get it shipped. I am sorry to turn to you guys but the POA is a bit more resourceful than the Allante group. Thanks, The Old Man This message has been edited by Scot Stern on 06-13-2005 at 03:39 PM |

From what I've found, it's not so much the weight as the size that dictates the cost and who can/can't move it for you. $210 across country doesn't sound unreasonable. If someone in here doesn't know, stop by a Mailbox etc. (or a place like it) and explain to them the dimensions and weight and see what they come up with. |

Greyhound Bus Line. Cheap but you need to have them take it to the bus station and you will have to pick it up at the bus station. |

Scot, To me, that does sound high. I just shipped my stock exhaust to Florida from San Diego for $38. The box was 6' x 2' x 2' and weighed about 80 lbs. I have to think a dashboard has to be close to that. I sent it UPS. If you go to UPS.com they have a calculator that is reasonably close to what you will pay at the drop off place. |

Eight years ago, I took on a job that no one for miles wanted to do. The owner of a car had complained that her dashboard looked like Death Valley and needed to be re-covered. That's when I became aware of a vendor in Cars & Parts, Car Craft, & Hot Rod Magazines. There's a company on in California called "Just Dashes". I have delt with them & was blown away by the quality they did on a 1975 Pontiac Grand Ville dash. This is where I would recomend ANYONE to go to. When it's done, IT'S NEW, not a used unit in fair condition! No one will treat you better or a higher standard of quality. I bought a bumper cover from Street Scenes. It came in a large cardboard box but did arrive by common carrier. Too large for UPS. The problem is most junkyards don't have the boxes or the time time bother with trying to ship it economically. |

Like Ed, I would try Greyhound. Most peolpe do not think of them and they actually do a lot of cargo stuff and they get there pretty quick considering. Wally |

Shipping cost does not seem that high to me but it depends how bad you want the dash. Must be one closer to you somewhere. I shipped a Harley to someone in California for $480.00. And that was door to door and on a skid. |

HEY SCOTT-Didn't have a problem with the dash on my Allante, but wait till both of your top motors go out and are not available through the dealer anymore and if you might find one they cost about 1300 bucks each. Both of mine went out within 3 months of each other----Sold the car |

Just dash does great work........but it cost me $440 to get the dash for my Dart done. It looks as good as new and they claim the material is much better than the original stuff they used in `67 They are located in California, you might give them a call and if you are close take it by and see if they can do it. Have you thought about having a trim shop make a carpet cover for it? |

I have contacted JustDashes and I have sent them the pictures. I am awaiting a reply as to the viability of having it fixed. Like Prowl 36 I am committed to getting this fixed and then selling the car. In its current condition, there would be limited interest but with a new dash, the car will appear to be close to a 10. I just want to get rid of it as Cadillac does nothing to support it. I am forever impacted by Cadillac's attitude toward this orphan and I shall never buy another of their products. It is no wonder that they can't give away an XLR given the support that they provide for the Allante. Thanks for all of the input and I'll let you know what happens. As an interesting side note, I tried to post the exact same question on the Delorean web site and the "moderators" turned it down as it was not Delorean specific. I thought this was particularly interesting as the Delorean suffers from similar degradation of the dash pad (mine did not)and, I would have assumed that they too would have had an interest in the outcome. And they wonder why participation on their board is so limited...... Thanks for all of the support.

Just Dashes will not dissappoint you. No one comes close to their standard of quality. No one !. If anything, once you replace the dash with their work, you'll want to keep the car. From one "old man" to another, you're welcome........ |
