Seen the first commercial for the Pontiac Solstice today and we REALLY like it - very appealing design and IMO the best looking Pontiac since the Fiero GT (which I owned in 1988)

What do you think about the new Pontiac ?

I like it too.

They had the cast? of apprentice work on a sales brochure for it. I dont watch the show just happened to catch that episode.

Isn't Buick bringing something out similar also?

small, but I really like the looks....about the size of a Miata.....I think they have a hit if the dealers don't try to gouge the livin' daylights of potential customers....

I like it as well. But i'm sure the dealers will try to get their extra markup. I can see over sticker from the get go.

This one's going to be interesting to watch.

Given the General's (can we say) failure over the SSR, XLR, & GTO, it would seem that something better work & work soon! Dealer mark-up is an interesting concept.
Think about it. The public (just might) love the vehicle, only to be turned off by price gouging dealers who have had a slow traffic in the showrooms. In today's tight economy, this would be extremely counter-productive!
I don't think the General could tolerate another failure.

Size wise it looks like a Lotus Elise.
Gas guzzler tax $1300 on the Automatic trans.

I like the way the hood opens.

Heard a rumor that production is delayed until fall and production capacity is 6000 units. So wait in line and prepare to be gouged.~Robert

Dusti - I like them! Larger displacement/hp engine due out next year,,,,,probably when GM introduces the Saturn Sky--- [same basic car,,,different cosmetic look,,,3 to 4K more $$$]

Red5 - [correct name] - where did you read about an automatic transmission??? First releases will all be 5-speed manuals,,,from what I read.

According to Pontiac, late summer the first ones will be released. GM ran a special for the first 1,000 to retail customers who put down a deposit for hold. That offer expired last sunday. I was told dealers were told NOT to raise the prices,,,or forfeit zone allotment allocations thereafter >>>> yeah, right! I was going to jump on that first 1,000 offer, then thought about the usual problems in the early models, so I passed.

I might go one a year from now. Prefer to have a little bigger motor and a automatic,,,,done my share of shifting over the years, lol.

Here is the link to the Saturn Sky [early 2006]:

I found it on the bottom of their web page that I posted the link to...in the fine print.

*Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. Tax, title, license, dealer fees, $1,300 gas guzzler tax and optional equipment are extra. Gas guzzler tax is required only with automatic transmission.

But your right...I see no option for the Auto trans....assume they will have it eventually.

RED7....unless Ed promoted me again

RED5 - if Ed promoted you,,,,,that would be a set back, lol.

Thanks for finding that fee,,,I missed it. Can't see why an automatic in that light weight of a car would make it fall into a gas guzzler classification? Strange.......

..

They have been very adamant since Day One that this car was going to be "Under 20,000" ... a huge part of their campaign.... and with it stickered at 19,995, I'd be willing to say that this is One car they will not ALLOW the gouging to even begin on........

Geno - maybe those GM dealers padding the SSR's learned something?? If they pad the Soltice, it brings it up to a new Mustang price and many buyers would opt for the 'Stang at that point,,,I would. The Soltice is designed to attack the market of the Mazda Miata buyers. Fast,,,it won't be, but it looks good.

This is NOT meant to be a SPOILER...

I think the looks are nice...also nice LOOKING 'SKY' that AC mentions...but has anyone here ever driven a Miata? I have! They look & sound & corner awesome--yet--they are just wayyy too gutless...like having a great looking Geo Metro...which has even less oomph! So, if ya' can live with the lack of pedal response, go for it! Also...I ain't believing the under $20k price tag until I see it--in person! The original Prowler was supposed to sell for under $30k--originally--was it not?!
Again...No SPOILER intentioned...JMHO.

Geno - yeah Rub it in,,,butt munch!

KyJel - the first Prowlers were MSPR under 40k,,not under 30k. Something like $38k,,,,but the dealers said that was X 2,,, = $76,000 plus taxes, title, doc fees, dealer add-ons, how stupid you look, etc, etc, etc,,,,,,,,,, I went in to look at the first one, and I looked so stupid they told me to leave!

I read somewhere within the last week that the Miata is THE most sold convertible ..... been around a long time, and a lot sold over the years.....
Drove one a long time ago (7-8-10 years?) and it was fun, handled well enough too, but as Tike said, 'gutless'....

I know WHAT the first ones sold for, AC...but all the articles leading up to that point indicated under $30k--which, as you noted was not the case WHEN THEY HIT SHOWROOM FLOORS! That's what I am saying...all the literature indicates under $20k for the new Pontiac--but wait til they hit showroom floors--ain't gonna happen...bad cat raiding the dumpsters~LOL!!

The solstice is goign to be a very popular car. Expect drivetrain upgrades as years go on. Like the Crossfire getting more HP each year it seems.

Bob Lutz insisted from day one the car should go for 20K or under. The Prowler shouldn't be compared to the solstice situation as the Prowler has tons of exotic materials and assembly procedures. Our instrument panel is magnesium and an all aluminum frame....The solstice is on a basic platform, and they built a running model from computer in 2 months for the first show.

I beleive it will hold at 20K not including Dealer greed.

There's ALWAYS a 1st time for everything, I guess ($20k--ha) & I wasn't COMPARING the Prowler to this new Pontiac POS...only suggesting initial cost estimates [on paper] are ALWAYS but ALWAYS way lower than reality dictates actual $$prices$$ to be! Thazzall~

Doesn't the Solstice/Sky look little like the Dodge concept
car that was called the Copperhead.I think Ty was right on
the price of the Prowler,i remember when seeing it at the Auto shows they were talking 28k/32k if you look at old car
mag.High 20s to low 30s.We all know what happen when the car
got into the dealers hands.I remember somebody from Corp.
saying that the Prowler was going to be a streetrod for the
average working person"yeah right"So i guess will wait and
see...

Hey Dusti,I owned a Fiero GT 1988 as well...it was an awesome little car at the time.
Solstice will be a success I think because it is certainly priced right and it will steal a lot of thunder away from the Mazda Miata (main competitor).I saw it at this year's auto show....and it's slick!
