Blue Necks are Northerners -- the opposite of Rednecks. Because of Redneck jokes, here are some takes on how Southern folks look at Northerners (or how Northerners sometimes think of themselves).

YOU JUST MIGHT BE A BLUE NECK IF...

....Instead of referring to two or more people as "Y'all," you call them "you guys," even if both of them are women.

....You think barbecue is a verb meaning "to cook outside."

....You think Heinz Ketchup is REALLY SPICY.

....You would never stop to buy something somebody was cooking on the side of the road. (e.g., boiled peanuts).

....You don't have any problems pronouncing "Worcestershire sauce" correctly.

....For breakfast, you would prefer potatoes-au-gratin to grits.

....You don't know what a moon pie is.

....You've never had an RC Cola.

....You've never, ever eaten okra -- fried, boiled, or pickled.

....You eat fried chicken with a knife and fork.

....You've never seen a live chicken, and the only cows you've seen are on road trips.

....You have no idea what a polecat is.

....You don't see anything wrong with putting a sweater on your dog.

....You don't have bangs.

....You would rather have your son become a lawyer than grow up to get his own TV fishing show.

....You drink either "Pop" or "Soda"- instead of "Cokes."

....You've never eaten and don't know how to make a tomato sandwich.

....You have never planned your summer vacation around a gun-'n-knife show.

....You think more money should go to important scientific research at your university than to pay the salary of the head football
coach.

....You don't even have one can of WD-40 somewhere around the house.

....The last time you smiled was when you blocked someone from getting on an on-ramp to! the highway.

....You don't have any hats in your closet that advertise feed stores.

....You have more than one professional sports team in your home state.

....You call binoculars opera glasses.

....You can't spit out the car window without pulling over to the side of the road and stopping.

....You don't know anyone with at least two first names (i.e., Joe Bob, Faye Ellen, Billy Ray, Mary Jo, Bubba Dean, Joe Dan,
Mary Alice)

....You don't know any women with male names (i.e., Tommie, Bobbie, Johnnie, Jimmie)

....You don't have Maw-maw's & Pawpaw's.

....You get freaked out when people on the subway talk to you.

....None of your fur coats are homemade.

WOW!!

You are soooo right!!

I moved to IL from Long Island NY so I guess I'm still a northerner but you really nailed it there.

Whats a polecat?
They call Coke pop out here and I have been trying to adjust.
I'm trying to stop the YOU GUYS thing, I know women don't really like that out here.

NY has 9 sports teams. I almost forgot Buffalo.
IL has 5 if I counted right.

But, for breakfast I would love a Bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, over easy with salt pepper and butter on a roll.
Where the hell are all the Deli's out hear? Used to have like 2 at every intersection in NY.

I thought a polecat was a wolverine......one of the very few animals in the wilderness that hunts for the pleasure of killing...

polecat
Related: Vertebrates

carnivorous mammal of the weasel family. The name refers especially to the common Old World polecat, Mustela putorius, found in wooded areas of N Eurasia and N Africa. Similar to weasels, but larger and with longer fur, polecats grow to nearly 2 ft (60 cm) long, including the 6-in. (15-cm) tail. The fur, sold under the name fitch and much used in the early 19th cent., is dark brown above, with yellow patches on the ears and face. The belly, feet, and tail are nearly black. Like other members of its family, polecats have a scent gland under the tail which emits a fetid secretion used for territorial marking; the gland is most active when the animals are alarmed. Solitary, nocturnal animals, they spend the day in dens. They feed on small animals and eggs and are quite destructive to poultry and small game. Farmers have exterminated polecats in many areas, but they still survive in wilder places over most of their former range. Domesticated strains of polecat have been developed for hunting; these are called ferret , a name also applied to a wild polecat species of North America. The marbled polecat and striped polecat (see zorilla ) are related animals of Africa and W Asia. The skunk, a New World member of the weasel family, is called polecat in some regions. Polecats are classified in the phylum Chordata , subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Carnivora, family Mustelidae

When you move from one area to another there are always adjustments. My biggest one was and still is when someone calls a paper bag a sack. I remember when we moved from Chicago the first time we bought groceries down here and they wanted to know if we wanted a paper or plastic sack. I always thought the only things that came in a sack were potatoes.

When I got drafted in 1965, one of the guys from NY wanted to go get a soda about 10 PM. I asked him where we were going to find a soda at that time of night.
Around here a soda is an ice cream soda. We call it pop or a coke just like calling any refrigerator a frigidaire, in the old days but not any longer.
In Cincinnati if you do not hear what someone says, you say "Please" as in please repeat what you just said. Most people do not get the drift of that one for quite awhile.
Wash is pronounced warsh by about half the locals. Creek is a crick but we are right on the Mason Dixon line so we have a little of both sides here.

Weteyes,

I really miss the pizza and bagels too.
Will be flying into Islip on Tues and the first stop is for a slice of pizza.

As for shopping the town I live in has the 2nd largest mall in the country. And every franchise is in the area and some new ones that I didn't know of in NY like Coldstone Creamery and Jamba Juice. I heard there is a Coldstone (on 231) I think. go there and get the birthday cake Ice cream!!!

I grew up in Freeport and lived in W Islip also.
Literally was like day and night.

The suburbs of Chicago are just like Long Island.

All times are CT (US)
