In a breaking new story, they have announced that Terry Schiavo has died.

They indicated that Michael Schiavo has been living at the hospice for the last few days and was in control of the visits by her parents. They said that when her parents were told that her condition had deteriorated, Michael refused to let them in to see her.......that the police refused them entrance. It is not clear yet if they were able to see her or if they were with her when she died.

May she rest in peace, may her parents find peace.

Please tell me that there is more to the story other than he simply refused to let the family in her room in her last days/hours.

No one could be that cold, could they?

May she rest in peace and the family be able to have the ability to overcome the long drawn out ordeal.

I seen the special report and it isn't the fact he wouldn't let them in they would not be in the room together (husband/parents) I'm sure there will be another report later stating whether they were in the room when she passed.

This was a personal matter that was turned into a circus in the media.......now we will have books and movies about it for years to come. Plus I'm sure there will be many of hours/days/months of our elected officials time spent on the subject.

The ironic part of this is the past 12 days she was not given food or water......Kind of what got her into this mess to begin with.....an eating disorder

R.I.P. Terry

Nightly News reported that when her parents were called to notify them that she was dying, Michael would not allow them in to be with her at the end. Her brother (and wife?) was in the room and was escorted out after Michael told them to leave and they indicated they wanted to be there with her. They also report that an autopsy is being done to determine the actual cause of her condition.

Michael will have her cremated rather than burial.

I hope God forgives him for being such a jerk. Regardless of anything that has happened between him and her family, he should have put all that aside and allowed her family to be with her when she died. I'm guessing that he'd better watch his back..........you never know what some crazy might do.

This is actually a daily occurrence in our Countries and the sad thing is, our medical and political systems find it quite acceptable. We really are just serving ourselves (the living) by not having to deal with the fact of actually putting someone to death....even if it is for the better. Our politians need to get out of the 1950's....in some cases the 1850's. As a society I find this embarrassing....is this really the best we can do?

There is a lesson here: Please, PLEASE complete a health Care Advance Directive (a.k.a. Living Will). That way, NO ONE will have to GUESS what your wishes are.

Can you spell "Bulimia Nervosa" as the problem?

Learning from the Terri Schiavo Tragedy

Eating Disorders are Potentially Life Threatening

The intense focus on Terri Schiavo’s survival in a persistent vegetative state or her death has obscured attention as to how a supposedly healthy 26 year old woman could be propelled into a permanent state of helplessness. It has been repeatedly reported that Schiavo suffered from bulimia nervosa.

Vivian Hanson Meehan, ANAD president and noted authority in the eating disorders field says, “Bulimics may be subject to cardiac arrest due to low potassium levels, resulting from abuse of laxatives, diuretics and self-inducing vomiting. Restricted food intake may also contribute but is rarely the sole cause. Abuse of emetics, such as Ipecac, may also cause damage to the heart muscle and death as was true for Karen Carpenter.” Bulimic behavior often includes abuse of laxatives and diuretics with or without vomiting.

She goes on to say, “Our hearts grieve for all who suffer these events because of society’s focus on super-thinness and for the pain of loss for their families. Such episodes should alert the world to the need for preventing eating disorders with loss of ‘real’ life potential and happiness for otherwise competent individuals.”

Eating disorders, including anorexia and bulimia, are serious mental illnesses that affect 8 million people in the United States. Individuals typically report the onset of their illness at a young age, 86% before age 20 (based on ANAD research). Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses; a woman with anorexia is 12 times more likely to die than a woman her age without an eating disorder. Individuals with bulimia risk severe electrolyte imbalances, kidney disturbances, heart problems and other serious, life threatening medical complications.

With all the media focus on Terri Schiavo, there is little attention paid to the reported reason for her persistent vegetative state: bulimia. Since the recent intensified interest in Terri Schiavo, ANAD has received many calls and emails from concerned individuals and families about the potential dangers of eating disorders. Please, help ANAD educate the public and media about the seriousness of eating disorders. Contact your local media: newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations . The greater the understanding of eating disorders, their warning signs and serious complications the greater the chance we can positively impact the lives of the millions of people affected by eating disorders.

If you are concerned about yourself or a loved one and are looking for help, please contact ANAD (847-831-3438 or anad20@aol.com) or you can click here for a list of professionals in your area.

ANAD – National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders ~ The oldest national non profit organization dedicated to alleviating the problems of eating disorders and promoting healthy lifestyles.
