Interesting facts - still need moderation but I didn't know all these facts: DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter? Read on to the end...gets very interesting! Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added! Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years. And now, for Margarine.. Very high in trans fatty acids... Triple risk of coronary heart disease. Lowers quality of breast milk... And here are the most disturbing facts.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING! Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC.......And margarine is initially BLACK, but it is DYED YELLOW to look like butter. These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).. YOU can try this yourself: purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) ... it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it...even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast? |

CJ, I read an article similar to that about 5 years ago and will not use anything except butter now. If any animal won't eat it neither will I! Dale |

Wasn't this issue debated in a (70's era) Marlon Brando movie ("Tango in Paris")? I think we could better discuss the new BURGER KING Pass me my Lipitor! This message has been edited by Ed W. on 03-30-2005 at 05:15 AM |

Sorry to hear about your loss Jim. Our condolences. My previous post was (of course) in jest. Lipitor is now a part of my daily routine for the rest of my life. In the two years I've been retired, my cholesterol has gone down 97 points (to 170). Much of this drop has been to a double dose of Lipitor & Carol watching what I consume. I still look back on my "devil-may-car" consumption attitude & make lite of it. But the truth be known, it was killing me. |

Its hard to give up the things you like... but if it means a longer, healthier life... its a small price. Good to see you have done something about the cholesterol issue Ed, Its great to have someone to help you along... I just eat red meat about once a week and when i do its a good cut..I limit my dairy products by using soy milk for cereal and eat lots of fish and some chicken....thats it really. I eat mostly Salmon or Haddock because we can get it real fresh, sometimes I BBQ shark in the summer. Lobster season will be starting soon so i will have a big feed or two of the tasty crustaceans. |

You can have my share of sea food. Never got into it. I went on a "lakes" freighter trip within the first month I was out. Carol had fish EVERY night while I was gone. she didn't care what it did to the smell of the house, she had fish. Mind you, I still stop for some "martyred beef" once in a great while, but the rest of the time I'm pushing the rabbits away from the salad bar. Carol uses olive oil in just about everything. I do two bowls of Cheerios every morning. When I meet my fellow R.O.D.E.O. or R.O.M.E.O. members for breakfast, it's usually oatmeal & raisin toast. Oh, and.............what? What does what stand for? Sure, I'm glad you asked. Yep, we're all card carrying members. It's a Michigan thing, remember? |
