I've been following this story rather closely. Hard to imagine even a portion of the finger going through the meat grinder,,,,must have had a large "chili meat" plate for that to happen. The woman spit out the finger portion immediately. They were able to obtain a fingerprint. I can assure you,,if true,,this is not the fault of Wendy's, rather the meat processing plant from where it came. Having said that,, SELL YOUR WENDY'S STOCK

It will be interesting to see if this came from a right or left hand (refer to different thread). |

I worked at a Wendy's. The meat that goes in the chili is actually the hamburger patties that do not sell. The grill person grills hamburgers all day. If the corner falls off, or there are leftovers at the end of the day, they are put in a pan and covered with water. When the pan is full, the mixture is boiled to tenderize the patties. Then they are diced up with two big spatulas and put in to a big pot with the chili base. The nice thing about Wendy's is the hamburger is never frozen. It comes in large plastic bags from the plant chilled. Each Wendy's has a burger stamper that takes the bulk burger and forms it into the square patties. These are chilled in the cooler until frying on the grill. So if this finger came from the plant, it made it into a large bag of raw hamburger, through the burger stamper, on the grill, into the leftover pan, through the chili boiler, and into this lady's bowl. IF this burger had actually stayed intact on the grill (my theory is the finger caused the burger to break apart upon grilling) imagine the reaction into biting into the finger in cheeseburger instead. Guy - here is the story from the news wire source: Just In Time For Lunch ... Holy smokes, is this gross. Wendy's chili is not made out of people -- well, it is, but just a little bit. Santa Clara County health officials confirmed Wednesday that the thing a woman bit on when enjoying her chili at a Monterey Highway Wendy's was, in fact, a human finger. They're not sure whose. It was about an inch-and-a-half, with a longish, nicely groomed nail. And while it gave the woman -- Anna Ayala, 39, of Las Vegas -- a bad case of the willies, it likely caused no physical illness, officials said. That's because the finger was safely cooked, simmering along at 170 degrees with more traditional chili ingredients, such as tomatoes, beef and beans. About 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Ayala, in town with her family to drop off her in-laws who live in San Jose, scooped up a mouthful of chili. It was her first visit to a Wendy's. I'm more of a Carl's Jr. person,'' she said Thursday night. Suddenly something crunchy was in my mouth,'' she said, and I spit it out.'' After much examination, she and her tablemates realized just what the special ingredient was. Then the vomiting commenced. Police and county health officials were called to the Wendy's, but no one there was missing any digits. We had everyone kind of show us they had 10 fingers, and everything was OK there,'' said Ben Gale, director of the county's Department of Environmental Health. In confirming it was a finger, the county medical examiner also found that it wasn't badly decomposed and had a solid set of fingerprints. Conceivably, officials said, police could lift a print and perhaps match it to a partially fingered person through a database. For now, officials figure -- since it was a jagged cut -- it may have happened on a meat grinder. In any case, the county shut the Wendy's for a while and impounded all the remaining chili and all the ingredients used to make it. They hope to track all the fixings to try to find the source of the finger. Wendy's spokesman Bob Bertini said never in the fast-food chain's 35 years has a body part showed up in the food. PS/FYI - while I worked as a meat cutter, occasionally we would have two nearby Wendy's run out of burger meat and buy from the grocery store - they didn't care if it was "frozen or fresh" meat when they were about out of business. |

Knowing a little about the food (restaurant) industry I agree with XPGUY. Seems as though that finger tip went through entirely too much to wind up where it did accidently. Also knowing a little about the hospital industry there is a special waste contanier (dumpster, if you will) at hospitals where all used medical, siringes, towels, sheets, etc. and unreplaceable body parts are discarded for disposal, easily accessible to the right person wanting to get even with a restaurant for something. Hold your horses before you say anything.....My family owns a Large well known restaurant in the French Quarter and you would not believe the stories I could tell about the things people have pulled just to TRY to get a free meal. I could only imagine someone that wanted to get even for something! This would fit only to perfect. Ruin you name, end your customer relationships and KILL your pocket book at the same time. Sounds like someone trying to get even to me! |

Wrong,,,snow bound breath,,,,Wendy's detectives have been keeping an "eye out" for a suspect. Early this morning, the FBI has traced the fingerprint off the Chili finger and have identified their suspect,,,,now to find him. Be on the look out for this sorry individual: Reported to be driving a stock, red, Plymouth Prowler. Last seen at a 'used battery exchange store'. Call 911 if you see this suspect. Not considered armed [with any degree of humor],,,but considered dangerous!!! This message has been edited by ALLEY CAT on 03-27-2005 at 08:03 AM |

from Jay Leno: I bought a bowl of chili today at Wendy's, and burned my finger in it after the one in it was already burned. It just proves that Wendy's chili is hand made. |
