Dusti - that would be me. Actually, I like Indy Car racing as first choice,,,,,then F-1. Enjoy the sound of those high revs. Open wheels,,, side by side @ 215! No Fear! Smell of methanol! No hoods, trunks, fenders, windshields, roofs, lug nuts, or mechanic's named Bubba.

I love F-1 racing. I watch in on TV whenever I can. I'm going to the US GP in Indy this year. CT Prowler says it's not much to see, but I'm going anyway.I've been to the Spanish GP, German GP and Belgium GP. Watched Mario Andretti the year he won the 1979 world driving championship in F1 while I was living in Spain. There is nothing like being in the garage area on Saturday night watching the Ferrari mechanic work like a surgeon on the engine to get it "perrrrfect."

Bob-- If you have contacts who can get me into the pits and see some of the behind the scene stuff i'll meet you out in Indy. Problem is it's hard to pass in Formula 1 They are all road courses. I watched the race last weekend, I think it's more interesting on TV. You get more info and you get to see action on the whole track. Of course it's always fun around the pits, seeing the Cars, Celebrities. If you come up with something let me know. What's the date this year!------------------

I can't argue the technology point, those cars make the Nascar rides look like chariots. I just have not been able to warm to the drivers and the racing style. Even with all the changes in Nascar over the last decade, you still get the feel that some or most of the guys are kind of like regular guys, alot like you, family men from modest backgrounds, with family values. I used to get the feel that the European drivers were elite, pampered playboys hanging out in the casino in Monaco. Maybe that is the way it is or the way it used to be. Same feeling I get when I look at the crowd. The people I meet at Nascar races seem to be more from my background and lifestyle. That is my pull to Nascar. Don't get me wrong, I love all motorsports, and will watch, and go to see almost anything. But my passions lie with what I can relate to. Not just who has the most tech., or can go the fastest.------------------ BackinBlack

Tom- some of what you say is true. But todays NASCAR guys have private Jets, Million $$$$ RV's, Helicopters. Ferrari's, lambos, 10-20 Million $$$ Homes. This isn't the good old days with real stock cars and Richard Petty. Formula 1 is the most watched racing in the world so its not just the rich who attend. They just dress better, have more style then some Pig farmer in Nebraska! lol. Don't kid yourself most of those good old boys sitting next to us in the Nextel Tower weren't close to being upper middle Class guys. They also own $500000 John Deere Combines instead of Ford GT's------------------

What amazes me is that there's STILL no American driver in F1 - I mean HOW do they expect the American public to 'get the hang' of it when all there's driving is a bunch of foreigners - Tom's right, HOW should Americans idenfity with the sport ?!All nice that they brought the U.S. Grand Prix back to Indy, BUT what good does it if there's no "local" hero driving ?? And since this year they got a guy from INDIA driving, come on - gimme a break !!

Formula 1 racing is really an international sport. Mario Andretti drove F1 for a couple years and so did Eddie Cheever (sp). I lived in Nepal for four years and that Indian driver is a national hero in India. They love racing too and that guy worked his way up to F1 just like all the other drivers. I understand the need to identify somehow with the driver/manufacturers, but what attracts me is the driving aspect. Great driving is great driving and great competition is great competition no matter the nationality of the driver. I want to see the desire to win, not just compete. When the American UOP Shadows raced in the 70s in Europe, it was an all black F1 racer with the American flag high up on the intake behind the driver. I can't tell you how proud I was and how hard I yelled each time those two cars screamed passed me. One driver was Nick Price who was killed driving the red, white and blue, but he was British. The other UOP driver was French I think. I appreciate the competition in NASCAR - guys flying around the track at 200MPH with 1/2 an inch between them! That's exciting no matter what country you're from. It's just different from Formula 1 racing. Hell it would pretty boring if we all like the exact same thing all the time!

Bob ,you got that right. And you know what, if I had an opportunity to take a lap in an F1 or a stock car, I would jump in that F1 and let it fly. Maybe unless the offer was for Daytona,lol!------------------ BackinBlack

Good points, certainly - BUT I just don't understand with all the talented drivers here in the U.S. , there is not a single American driver in F1 !Going back to NASCAR racing, and seeing how much $$ in revenue this is creating, Bernie Ecklestone must kick himself for not 'tapping' into the U.S. market for example WITH an American driver, don't y'all think ??

Dusti - F-1 is big time paychecks to race drivers. Eddie Cheever failed, Michael Andretti failed, and even Jacques Villeneuve from Canada has failed in F-1. Too many young American drivers wait until they are past their prime when desiring to attack F-1,,,,guess they are too secure in their American life styles and don't want to travel all over the world to race, or can't face failure. Right now, I'd say the Brazilians have the best all around drivers in the world. Michael Schumacher is nearing the end of his career>>>>>while earning 42 million $$$ per year = what, 16 races at 90 minutes each,,,,,you do the math. I am hoping some young American driver will develop soon,,,,but I don't see right now. Bernie Ecklestone could care less about American race fans,,,,only American dollars. Good thread

AC, Mario Andretti wasn't a "failure" in F1. He won the world driving championship of Formula 1 in the either 77 or 78.

Bob - I know, Dusti was referring to current years of F-1 racing. Mario's days were a quarter century ago. In all of the racing I've watched in the past 50 years,,,,,nobody could outdrive Aryton Senna de Silva. Not that I liked him, but I could see he drove like no other human being. Jimmy Clark a close second, Jackie Stewart third, Nigel Mansell fourth, AC Salzman fifth.

True Dusti,,,,but Williams hasn't the technology of Ferrari and McClaren. Ferrari's wind tunnel operates 24/365,,,,who else can claim that?
