its all welded... there is nothing on this earth that bonds to polyethylene...the key word is "bond"...its a hydrocarbon based material. the interior of the pipe has bulkheads welded in to create chambers.. this material can be left in the water to freeze in for the winter without damage... you can beat it with a sledge hammer without hurting it... tough stuff...

Great job Jim! Think you better hurry and put a TM on that bad boy before someone steals your idea.

Looks like a great idea. How would you price it? By the square foot? Also could a hoist be attached to it somehow?

I actually had a business plan together to manufacture these .... financing was set up , then the company i was working for claimed because i thought of the idea at work, they owned the idea and if i made any they would tie it up in court so as i would starve to death.....I quit that company Feb. 18th after 8 years....my business plans are on the shelf, but not forgotten... i have a design for a 25 ft diameter octagon shaped float with a screened gazebo in the center....

some day .....

Don't they need to have some type of proof to do that?

these ones are the design i used to sell the most of...8ft wide x 20 ft long,
I sold appx 35 of them from May to Aug @ $1400.00/ea they are ready for a wooden deck to be installed.
the platic frame will float 3100 lbs before the top of the pipe reaches the water level.

sadly, a large company can tie things up for a long time before it even gets to court.....meanwhile i loose everything cause i have no income...

i'm not trying to sell these , i just thought i'd tell the story as i am proud of my work.... and yes, bitter about how things went...

That's really too bad. Sorry this project and your efforts have been in vain.

oh well.... i'm out and not there for them to use anymore. the witches made $950.00 clear profit on each one and never paid me a cent....
i took the other technician with me to my new job , the manager quit and went somewheres else....
there were only 3 of us there... now they don't have anyone to make them or even open for business on Monday....
or anyone to run the special equipment....
they will be lucky if they sell one this summer.......

david just hit goliath it the eye....ha...ha

You know corporate america (canada) sucks sometimes. I'm sure you've "MODIFIED" your design now so that it's NOT the same as the idea you came up with. Additionally did you sign a non-compete clause? Lastly, if you sell them through someone else, it's hard to sue what you can't find.
Good - Luck - looks like a good project. Floating docks do good down here in Florida with the water and people with wave runners, or small boats.

Jim,
They sure look nice. Bummer about the company you use to work for. If they had been smart they would have worked out a way for it to be a WIN, WIN situation for all involved. Now nobody is getting ahead! Sometimes greed and stupidity ruin a business.

hey Rp,

I didn't sign a non competitive clause, and can change the design by at lease 20% as i fine tune the manufacturing process....i'm going to see in the next couple weeks if my new company is interested in making these... but will not be as trusting as i was with the other witchs. If the new job doesn't pan out i will develope the business as i had planned... my 5 year plan was to franchise the idea so as they could be made in different areas and satisfy demand... we lost out on sales of 20-30 units last summer because we couldn't make them fast enough.... all sales were word of mouth without any advertizing of any kind...

this is a completed decked in unit...

Hey Jim,
Even though you might want to give your new company the opportunity to manufacture and sell these, make sure that they do so through you - you license it to them so you don't get into the same pickle. I don't know about patent law in Canada, but if it's not too expensive - patent your idea. (Product looks nice though)

Thanks Randy,

I'm unsure if i will get them involved or not, but have found out a patend can cost up to 10,000.00. I'm just a workin joe and only bring home 25,000/yr... no savings, i've got kids.... and i refuse to sell my Kat...i see how things go for the next couple years maybe i'll take the chance and jump into the fire someday...

i am making a zodiac style boat out of the material, about half done... its 20ft long and 8ft wide..will have it finished for this summer..

Looks cool. Listen - patents here cost a ton and I've got a product that I'm selling that I could have patented, but the costs were prohibitive, plus everyone just does it anyhow, and I don't have money for attorney's fees. Plus then they do it in another country. So the idea becomes - BE First, BE Fast, BE Best Product. Then Patent becomes - Who cares. Just document your ideas. One good idea someone told me about is photograph or take your design ideas - then seal them in tamper proof mailing certified to yourself. Then hold onto it. Anyone ever asks in court of law - THEY can open that doc and it's proof.

Well, being a canadian, I figured you'd be working on the INDOORS golf course. I've seen the floating golfcourse thingy. sits in your pool and you chip balls onto the floating green. Very cool - maybe I'll get one this summer.
