So why is it we eat margarine???

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys; when it killed the turkeys the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter?

Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine...
Very high in trans fatty acids.
Triple risk of coronary heart disease.
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol)
Lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers by up to five fold.
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.

And here is the most disturbing f act....
Margarine is ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC...
This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: * no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) * it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it even those teeny weenie
microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

I got that in an email several times. I wonder if that is true or if that is the dairy farmers starting an urban myth.

I sent it out after receiving it a week or two ago. I forwarded it to a friend that has coronary trouble. He told me he's been on margarine for years and now questions the advice of his doctor that recommended the switch and asked for the origin of the e-mail. The person that sent it to me took it at face value and assumed it to be true. I did some research on the net and it turns out that margarine might be the better deal depending on who you listen to. Go Figure

For what little i consume, butter is the choice for me. Same goes for sugar. I just don't like all the artificial offerings. Moderation of anything is the key.

I'm with Lone Ranger; real sugar, real eggs, real vegetable oil, real butter, real shortening, etc. The fewer chemicals in my system the better,

Thanks for posting CJ.

If left outside birds will not eat margarine but they will butter! Is a bird smarter than a human? I always prefer the real stuff to something man made when it comes to food. Moderation is the key to a healthy life.

I don't know if it's true. A friend sent it to me and I just thought it was interesting. I'll have to ask my dietician what she thinks!

I heard this over 15 years ago. I haven't used margarine since. Look where it got me!

i worked in a margarine manufacturing plant for a while as an operator... i know exactly what is in it...veg oil, whey powder, and salt..... lots and lots of salt... bags of salt...

i use margarine (lactose free) because i want to steer clear of animal proteins as much as i can.... a huge factor in prostate cancer... lost my Dad and best friend to that monster... don't ever want to go there ...

The snopes article pointed out above is quite informative... basically saying it is true, with additions, SOME of which are equally important, especially if you are needing to watch your cholesterol:::::

Because butter is an animal product, it contains cholesterol, amounting to 30 mg per tablespoon or 10% of the USDA recommended daily allowance. Margarines, because they are non-animal products, do not.

Another point well made:

Although a great deal of the information given in the e-mail is valid, one bit of intelligence is nothing more than hyperbole tossed in by the author in an effort to make his point more strongly. The claim that some comestible is but a "single molecule away" from being a decidedly inedible (or even toxic) substance has been applied to a variety of processed foods, but that type of statement (even if it were true) is essentially meaningless. Many disparate substances share similar chemical properties, but even the slightest variation in molecular structure can make a world of difference in the qualities of those substances.

And with that.... I can only add this:

Ham & Eggs
A days work for the chicken
A lifetime commitment for the pig
