....obviously, I am not in the automobile business, but my businesses are all driven by customer demand...I can't just stock one or two products in my stores and make my customers buy those....if Walmart adopted the premise the auto manufacturers use, there would be no Super Walmarts, they would only be a kiosk in the center of the mall with a few items to buy...

...NO COLOR SELECTION....I used to bitch about this when Prowlers were in production too ....it is not only DC doing this, but since I buy mostly DC products I see this more when looking at Chrysler products....

...Chrysler 300...nothing in red (looks like they used the Buick color charts as a guide)???....

...the new SRT8...offered in TWO exciting colors(black and silver)...nothing in red there, not counting blues, white, greens etc etc....

...Rumble Bee...two colors offered, everyone in town has a truck that looks just like their neighbors....

...Daytona Ram...two colors offered, there will be a fleet of these in my town that are all EXACTLY alike....

...the new Viper....one color only, blue...Corvette has 3 different colors of red this year, although one has been discontinued....

...I have to admit I don't understand the thinking behind these decisions....maybe, just maybe, if they offered more colors, they might sell even more vehicles....

....I personally think they have dug up Henry Ford, shipped his remains to Germany, and during a board meeting with his spirits he told them about his early days...his cars came in any color, as long as they were black....

....humor me DC, let me pick my own color on my new $90K sports car....

...I owned 2 of the Vipers in this picture, and even I can't remember which ones they were.... ???

Larry - at least it's better now than in the first half of the last century when 90% of the cars were black!

There now doesn't just cheer you up?

Larry - I think I spotted your Vipers in the photo. One of yours is the forth one in the third row and the other is the tenth in the last row. I knew this dang Craker Box magnifying glass would come in handy one day...

Larry,

Perhapse a user name switch is in order. How about Tangled in Red or Tangled in Color? :D

Yep, other manufacturers do the same thing. Seems they always just stop one color shy of completing the rainbow. And somehow this one omission save money .. or options for next year. :D

With the limited production numbers of 7 to 145 cars per day for the Viper and Prowler I can understand the limited color selection in a given model year. But with higher volume production levels, the additional sales generated would seem to offset the additional production associated with a wider selection.

With regard to the Rumble Bee, the Daytona truck and the new Yellow Fever SRT10..............they aren't building that many of any of these particular vehicles..........therefore, it isn't economically feasible for them to offer them in a lot of different colors..........

REMEMBER WHEN

you could pay extra to have a car painted the color yuo wanted and it didn't have to be on THEIR color chart...code 999 on late 60's mopars

You could get 2 tone and in the 50's even tri-color

you could get the same color interior or a pick of several others with most all color cars

you could get the body on most in 2 door hardtop, 2 door post, 4 door hardtop, 4 door post, station wagon

Cars had style and BRIGHT TRIM

I understand the reasoning behind the COST FACTOR in manufacturing. I have worked in the manufacturing end of the BIG THREE and a Japanese plant. It is "follow the leader". From the beginning to the `70's the BIG THREE where the world manufacturers of automobiles. The japanese in the `70's made major improvements and started to give the American auto makers a run for the money.

If you look at the cars they were making, they limited the colors and options to reduce the manufacturing cost. Once the American auto manufacturers had to start to compete with them they had to do more of what the other manufacturers were doing to cut cost.

Now they have lost even more market share to the other world manufacturers they are cutting cost and corners more than ever.

With so many American workers not being able to afford a 30~40K car they are buying more KIA's and Scion's (another Toyota product) and the people who are looking for quality are buying Toyota's

I do not like where the american automakers are going. I will probably be looking for a job in the next 3 to 7 years due to the plant I work at closing or making drastic changes. I see more cars that are not from the big three that I like the looks of (no I do not plan on buying one). IMO what most of the US build/designed cars are looking like, turds on wheels.

The aging plants that most cars are built in are not as efficent as the modern new plants they have to compete with. The american auto manufactures still have the 50's additude in a lot of cases. The work force also needs to have a wake up call. So far the loss of so many jobs has not done it. Reading the paper and seeing the market share slip away at what I think is an ALARMING RATE has not done it.

WE the automobile buying public have more choices than ever when looking for a new car, but it is less from the brands we grew up with.

As long as the BEAN counters have the say in the bottom line and with the current additutes of the workers, management & labor stay the same we will have less and less vehicles made in the USA that the profits stay in the USA.

It is a Global business. My guess more people in Indiana work for the Japanese & Germans than that work for Ford, Chrysler and GM

Sorry for being so long. I have strong feelings toward the auto industry since I have spent most of my life working in factories. I hate what I see on a daily basis

Wildcat, well said. In the early 70a the American cars rusted out before they were paid off. Fuel injection? I don't think so! Disc brakes? Only on foreign or top of the line American cars. Never buy a car built on a Monday or Friday.
The auto industry has been turned on its head. The Japanese tried to give us a wake up call but we did not heed it in time. It is a global market and a global economy. We need to change since the rest of the world does not necessarily embrace everything we do as being the best way to do it.
Cars are good for 200,000 miles now. The flip side is that back in the day a family owned one car or no cars. Now most families own 3 or 4 or more cars. I heard of a family in Houston that has over 20 in one garage but that could be a rumor. lol.
GM Norwood, OH built Firebirds and Camaros. The quality was horrendous and that plant closed years ago. Things have got to change or as A/C would say:
It is the end of the world, I tell ya, the end of the world.

Vipers...
...I have owned 4 red, 2 black and 2 gray....
...my daughter owned 2 red, 1 black, 1 yelo....

...I would buy another Viper SRT anytime they came out with something really different....not a rerun of the Prowler Orange, or a special edition with a few pieces of red in the interior....

.....maybe I just buy too many cars, don't know...but I am bored with current offerings.....

...due to having several yelo Vettes I never owned a yelo Viper myself

yep, Wildcat, I remember the special paint code cars.....never owned one, but well aware of what they are....I would pay extra today to have my new car painted the color I want it...for the last several years Chevy has charged an extra $750. for Corvettes painted Yelo or Magnetic Red.....these are two of the most popular colors...I am sure it more than payed for a few extra gallons of paint
...I would pay extra to have a new Viper SRT coupe painted the color I want......maybe DC could could go to Sams Club, buy an extra cash register to put at the end of the production line to take peoples money....
...the big three are on a push to eliminate costs(employees), but I think they should concentrate on increasing product offerings to increase sales thus increasing profits....Ford, DC and GM will someday be the design and marketing divisions only....all manufacturing of parts and actual production of vehicles will be farmed out for $10. per hour....

WAL-MART World Wide Auto Manufacturers - Suppliers of GM, DC, and Ford automobiles.

Production plants: China and India

Company slogan: Always lower wages, ALWAYS!

Bell - I hate to say this, but you could be right on this one I'll dispute your $10 hour claim,,,,,,it will be $10 per 10 hour work day.
