For those not familiar with a wash, they are very common in southern California. The rest of the country calls them rivers, but here, we call them washes. For 360 days out of the year, they are dry and empty. But when we get our few inches of rain, the washes channel the runoff out to the Pacific or some reservoir or lake. These washes fill up very fast and the ground is usually so hard, water just rushes over it like blacktop. Many folks are killed each year in flash floods from being caught in a wash during a rain storm. Often it is not raining where they are killed, the runoff comes from a distant storm and catches them off guard.

Running next to Filmore California is a wash that is designed to handle runoff from the local hills. For most of the year it is dry and barren and there is a bridge about 1/4 mile long that just spans this dry gravel bed. Every time I drive over it I wonder why there is a bridge over gravel. These pictures below taken last week following the worst rainstorm in over 30 years show why this bridge is there. The house identified is my brother's house.

The orchards to the south of the wash are more than 60% destroyed. This scenario is repeated all throughout the region and will result in higher orange prices, avocado prices and various other produce. Just how much relief are these farmers going to see from foreign aid?

Why have a bridge going over it AND a road going right into the middle of it (far right last pic)?
