If you take two cars that are identical, both have 320 hp but, one has 350 ft/lb of torque and the other has 525 ft/lb's why is the later quicker off the line?

I know you can increase hp by adding things like headers, NOS, etc. Is there a way to increase torque?

You must have watched the hack mechanics from twins turbo garage last night. First the latter would in theory be quicker off of the line. I built a 383 that was in a Jeep wrangler about 11 years ago. It was 420 HP but about 475 ft lbs of torque. I had a lot that was changed in the way of cam (not to much duration, like 304/308 and 4somthing lift, 441 heads that were pNp'd and port matched to the headers and intake), and a torker 2 intake w/750. I basically built it copying an engine that was put together in one of the hotrod mags and tested. Freaked people out that it would do an 8.16 1/8th consistently but man did it break driveline parts.

YF--It's not how much HP and torque you have that will get you off the line faster, it's where in the power band that you make it. The lower the power kicks in, the faster off the line you'll be if you can hook up.

So how does one make more torque and lower where that is in the power band?

Thanks

Good example LL. You can increase the perceived torque at the bottom end by using a looser torque converter that will get the engine to the torque peak faster. As you keep increasing slip, the car will feel more spongy--loss of direct drive feeling. I have a converter from Prowler Pro that will allow me to power brake to a higher launch RPM then the stocker. I could still use more slip with the turbos because they dont come on until about 3000 RPM, but for a nitrous car hitting it out of the hole with slicks, it might be better. The best thing to do to increase torque is what Marty did--increase displacement.

If you want to increase displacement you have two ways to do it - bore the cylinders and increase the diameter of the pistons or stroke the engine which involves changing the crank & connectings rods (that attach to the pistons) and making the distance in the pistons travel in the cylinder longer.. Displacement is bore times stroke. Generally more stroke produces better torque and boring produces more horesepower although both torque and HP will increase with either.

In small block Chevy V8 a 383 is basically a 350 with longer stroke.

Another way to change torque is gearing. The Prowler Pro performance gears leaves the HP rating of the engine the same but prodcues more torque by increasing how quickly the power gets to the wheels - thus allowing for faster take offs.

Changing the engine breathing with headers and/or other exhaust mods or by changing the intake of air (Cold Air Intake, nitrous (cold air), suopercharger or turbos (compressed air) will also have some effects torque and HP.
