I was thinking abot the numerous posts i've made lamenting about the snow... the cold.... and the fact that it will be April untill i get to drive the Kat again..... its seems so easy to look at the things that are wrong with our lives and dismiss the great things that are sometimes taken for granted... Growing up a Canadian and hateing winter doesn't work....because winter always means hockey..... and hockey is a passion that is shared by parents and children.... fathers and mothers, sons and daughters...the glue that binds us.... a common love. My Dad was my hockey coach, he devoted so much time and effort to give me something that he felt would make a difference in my life.... 5am practices...hours driving to tournaments.... dealing with the problem parents on the teams he coached... the whole nine yards. He made a ice rink in the back yard that took up so much of his free time.... every night, and all weekend, all the kids around would come over and he would put lights up so we could have games... and he worried about someone getting hurt and getting his a$$ sued off. when I couldn't afford to put my sons into minor hockey.... Dad gave me the money because he said "it will make a difference to them when they get older " He was right. I lost Dad to cancer 5 years ago but i know he would be proud of me as i have been Coaching minor hockey since his passing... and today, as i have for quite a few years now, i am going down to the pond to shovel off the new snow so as me and the boys can go down for a skate, play a little shiny.... and if it isn't to cold tonight... light the Coleman lantern to hang in the tree to keep on skating....the apple never falls far from the tree, ain't it the truth ! so... the next time , i cry and whine about the winter... please pm me and tell me to "keep your stick on the ice" and i'll know what you mean.... sorry this was such a long read jim |

quick doctor ! give me something for this lack of hockey ....its killing me!...i've been a die-hard leafs fan since conception.... come on AC don't let the lack of ice stop you....Ball Hockey is Canadas second favorite sport...go to the rink someday just to watch the 5 and 6 year olds play....its a blast and free! the truth is always an easy write, are you suggesting i give myself a chilly willy ? the pond needs a couple of cold days to freeze up after a mild spell......then it will be "put me in coach..." |

Jim, Just noticed that you live in my favorite Canadian City. Halifax is in the middle of nowhere, on the way to nowhere. As such. very few will ever take the time to visit. I had the honor (gross understatement) of visiting your community in April of 1988. FWIW: I've been a student of the TITANIC for over 42 years (long before Cameron ever left his sandbox). On each anniversary of the sinking, I've always done something that made no sense to anyone but me. In 1988, I spent a week in Halifax taking in the Maritime Museum downtown, spending time with the late Russ Lownds, and walking the sacred ground of Fairview, Baron von Hirsh, & Mt Olivet Cemeteries where (as you know) 154 of the 300+ recovered victims are buried. When the civilized world ever decides to guage the humanity & pure hospitality of a community, Halifax will dominate the top of any list. If your Father brought you up in this city, then you are indeed blessed again. Many thanks for your excellent post. Ed Weichsler This message has been edited by Ed W. on 01-15-2005 at 03:17 PM |

hi Ed, they have done alot more things for the Titanic here recently... enlarged the museum, fixed up the cemetaries that currently are getting about 50,000 visitors every year just for the Titanic sites.... the city of Halifax certainly has alot of history... being well over 300 years old. you must have visited the citadel ? Just like stepping back in time .... thanks for you kind words jim |

A/C, Halifax is beautiful and has nice weather in July and August and Phoenix is horrible at that time of year. So he has you outdone for a couple of months out of 12. lol We rode motorcycles to Nova Scotia in 2000, (I think). Fabulous trip. We rode the jet boat in St. John's Newfoundland which was about the most fun I have ever had for $ 12 ($20 Canadian at that time). We did the Cabot Trail and went to Peggy's cove. Beautiful scenery. Saw a few Moose or is that Meese? We were there in early July. We stayed at B&Bs. We would love to come back up there. Maybe a Prowler outing in 2007? |

bathrooms are still dirty... football games were on and I do have priorities ! Today is supposed to be nice, only -15, and the sun is out... or maybe thats the porch light ... the pond will be perfect by tomorrow and i can't wait !... AC please post a pict of you skating on a pond (and not a dried up one with roller skates !!). 74 degrees is a perfect temp for me ... anything over 80 and i am uncomfortable, just not used to it. August is by far the best month for weather here, temp gets between 75-85, lots of sun and it cools down real nice at night.. great for sleeping... my hat is off to Ed for doing Newfoundland in July on a Bike...it can be quite chilly there at anytime of the year...those Newfies really are a great bunch of people...Their hospitality puts ours to shame, and we consider ours first class...I wanted to cruise Newfoundland this summer, Gros Morin park is beautiful, apparently very much like Norway. But we had so much fun on the Cabot Trail last year we will be going again this summer, maybe look for a cottage to buy, or a spot to set up a Stained Glass studio. |

Jim - picturesque country, to be sure. My mother traveled to that area in the early 90's and she enjoyed it. Maybe someday? Is that you? No wonder you always agree with Ed, lol. |

CORRECTION, we were in St. John's New Brunswick, not NewFoundland. We may be shooting for August of '05 for a return visit. I don't think the area could stand 100 Prowlers but if anyone else is interested, post here. This message has been edited by ed monahan on 01-17-2005 at 05:40 AM |
