BANGKOK, Thailand - Until two weeks ago, Smith Thammasaroj was a prophet without honor. As chief of Thailand’s meteorological department in 1998, he was accused of scare-mongering when he warned that the country’s southwest coast could face a deadly tsunami. Now when Smith speaks, people listen. And he has a new message: The United States must take some of the blame for the grievous number of casualties. The 68-year-old forecaster — who earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from the University of Vermont in 1962 — said he believes that if the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had acted quickly enough, many lives could have been saved. Workers at the Hawaii center have said they tried in vain to warn Indian Ocean nations about the possible effects of the earthquake but they were not equipped to monitor that part of the world and didn’t even have phone numbers for the right officials. The Hawaii center, set up in 1948, hosts the only regional network of its kind in the world, but is set up solely to monitor Pacific Ocean countries. “I’m not angry at them for failing to warn Thailand, because at that time they did not know for sure, they merely said a tsunami was possible after the earthquake,” Smith told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday. But after the giant waves hit southern Thailand, the center had more than an hour to alert India, Bangladesh and the Maldives, “and if they warned those countries, they could have saved thousands of lives,” he said. “It’s their failure to do so that makes me mad at them,” he said.

I think it was something that Bush had Chaney do! That is why we have not seen or heard from him since the election. It is probably a plan for Halibuton to make lots of money!!

I'm thinking I should lean towards the way you guys are thinking. It must be our fault,,,,we want to outsource more jobs there and this way our tax dollars can build new infrastructure. I say we should raise our contribution to 2 Billion $$$.

Yeah, if Kerry had won the election I'm sure Earth's tectonic plates would have stayed put.

Yup, another BUSH falt ... lets pay out to cover our responsibility ... oh yeah, California is a disaster area too ... well, hell ... the foreign ground comes first! Best let the world know how we help them versus our own, heck, THAT would be selfish! (and on a side note and of more serious nature ... in California -- if EVERY movie star gave $1M ... just THINK of the relief effort that their own state would see!!!)

I agree, at the risk of sounding uncaring, there are every type of fundraiser, money drive, tv ad, radio ad, commercial, concert, federal money, donatations going to this part of the world. It's complete overload and overplayed. Makes one wonder if the overall goal is to make everyone remotely associated with it a lottery winner.... As far as the rest of the world, everyone expects everything from us and then hates us for everything we have. I think it's time we pick up our marbles and only play with those that equally respect us (money coming their way or not). Wonder how many foreign telethons and money drives will be done to help California or the work still to be done with Florida after 4 hurricanes???? I'm guessing, NONE!
