Actually, they did have a clue. A very strong one.

The ocean edge would have retreated back into the ocean probably 100' before release all heck on them. Giving them plenty of time to seek higher ground.

I read where a local kid in the 6th grade recognized this and warned everyone on some beach she was on. Everyone evacuated and I believe it was the only beach where no one died......

It pays to know a little bit about how mother nature works!

I believe the girl was from England and had studied this topic at school and she told them what was going to happen......the pics above are from another Tsunami which was in Japan I think....not linked to current issue.

After seeing the pictures, there does not appear to be any HIGHER ground in the area. I guess you could go up to the second or third floor of a building. Oh, wait a minute, they all got leveled. They probably had about 30 seconds notice. If they had a helicopter they could have taken off, otherwise they were in deep trouble. One of the News programs had an "expert" talking about the minute or so, warning. Those poor people probably did not own a bicycle much less anything motorized. They had no chance whatsoever. JMO

I found this interesting-it was reported that not many animals were lost as they took off before it hit. That was reported in the first day or so. Later there was a story of a family on vacation that was riding on an elephant. Moments before there was any sign of the tsunami, the elephant broke from it's chain shackles and took off in a hurry and found higher ground. The family was saved. The source was either Fox,CNN or MSN. Jeff

its a true fact that if you see seagulls flying inland away from the shoreline then there is a serious storm comming... i notice this usually 4-5 hours before there is any signs of bad weather....its 100% acurate.

If you call me or the evil elf at 6am, chances are we're up, dressed, and sippin' our first cuppa java! Even when separated--as we usually are--by several hundred OR several thousand miles!

some congressman is trying to get the united states to put sensors in the water to alert us in case of one of these..but i understand we must have something like that cause they said jersey shore got a half a foot of wave that was from the tidal wave something like 20 hours later...not sure if all my facts are straight but we did record it even to the shore of long island....anyone hear that ??
the only think we have to worry about is the shelf falling off by the canary islands...it will happen one day...just dont know when .....

song by "Shango".....circa 1972.....
lyrics.....
..."day after day, more people come to L.A.,
hey better get ready, the whole place shakin' away"

(lyrics are from memory and may not be 100% perfect)

...remember when California was supposed to fall into the ocean.....even was a song about it.....

there was a program on the history channel yesterday that stated a Landslide in Alaska caused a wave 490 ft high... the evidence was pretty clear...

I either saw that show, or one just like it. Only in the one I saw, they stated that the wave was half a kilometer high (1,260 feet), and that it bared the land 490 feet up a cliff. It also showed a fault line in southern Hawaiian islands that they fully expect to drop off into the ocean one day, causing at wave at least 1,000 feet high.

I heard one report that on some beach over there,,,the surf went out nearly 2,000 feet before the wave came in. I would think that most adult minds would think something is wrong here,,,and make tracks to retreat. I could see where the children didn't have a clue, and got trapped. Sad.
