this was a comment made on the speed channel the other night by a muscle car expert.

" the 440 magnum motor was a better all round power plant than the 426 because once tuned to out perform the 440, the 426 was almost impossible to drive on the street..."

what's the opinion on that ? i know some of u guys have had, or driven, both... how about it ?

From a Book entitled Chrysler , Dodge & Plymouth Muscle

it states Car Life Magazine in 1968 published the following

The GTX with standard 375-horsepower 440 V-8 with TorgueFlight automatic transmission, did 0 - 60 in 6.8 seconds. It crossed the timing lights in 14.6 seconds at 96 miles per hour. The 426 GTX had identical 0-60 et and quarter mile ET and the qtr mile per hour was 97 MPH.

I owned a 67 Coronet R/T with a 375 HP 440. This was a single 4 barrel car with 375 HP. I have never driven a Hemi. The torgue for both the Hemi and the 440 six pack was rated at 490 lb ft. However that rating was at 3200 RPM for the 440 and at 4000 RPM for the Hemi. The 4 barrel 440 was rated at 480 lb ft of torgue @ 3200 RPM.

In 1990 Patrick Bedard wrote in Car & Driver Magazine
"The Street Hemi was a class act, very smooth, quiet at idle, tractable in traffic"

From eveything I read the 440 six pack was faster 0-60 than the Hemi, was cheaper purchase and maintain. The Hemi had a much higher top end and would eventually out run the 440 six pack.

I had the TorgueFlight Automatic in my 67. I could put it in drive and nail it. It would sit smoking the tires barly inching forward, until the speedo reached 60 mph. Then it would shift to second gear and start moving forward

I had a black '65 Dodge Coronet convert with a 426 wedge, 4bbl, 4-speed long throw shifter. Never was really impressed with that car, but it was a heavier convertible.
Tore it up for 12 months and sold it for $50 more than I paid for it. If I only had it now,,,,hindsight.

Yikes--that would be a hard one to regret.

...I have had many 440 Six Pak cars, 340 Six Pak cars, but only one HEMI Challenger RT/SE(1 of 37 made)....I have driven quite a few other HEMI cars and they all seemed the same as my Challenger...

....the HEMI seemed nose heavy to drive around town, more difficult to tune and on the highway got around 4 1/2 miles per gallon with the two four barrels(8Pak) in motion....the tires would spin thru any gear....impressive at a car show, made you an instant celebrity.....

....prefered the 440 Six Pak for regular driving duties, mileage and maintenance were both markedly better...it is a blast to feel the Six Pak kick in too....never got beat by a HEMI......

side note....the fabled 340 Six Pak performs very close to the Prowler....hows that for a 6 cyl.....

the HEMI...

......................................

...in the old days, there was a 383 Roadrunner in town with headers and who knows what else...it sounded great.....he ate up my '68 GTO so bad I never went back......later on, I found out just about everything in town would eat up my GTO....it was a pig.....moved on to a 396/375 Chevelle and went back out to get my sweet revenge...and I learned to avoid MOPARS after that :

burglar - that is a difficult one to top,,,,but I remember a story about Larry Meyes [Wildcat] trading one of his fine Mopar products for a boat. I've heard the boat gets wet when it rains in Indiana? Larry,,,,give us the story one more time so we all can cry with you!

PLEASE?

I had a '68 Charger with a 383 magnum and it was a sweet running machine. It had cherry bombs and it sounded awesome. Also had a '68 Charger with a 440. The 440 was difficult to keep tuned but when it was right it ran like hell. Still, I preferred the 383 for overall power and reliability.

WildCat might be working long hours now,,,,so I found his old post,,,,,get the Kleenix out

"I think I have the answer to why I'm so against a boat now. I SOLD MY `71 CURIOUS YELLOW 383 `CUDA CONVERTIBLE BECAUSE OF THAT DAMN BOAT SITTING IN THE BARN THAT HAS NOT BEEN IN THE WATER IN YEARS. I bought the boat and said I don't need that convertible and it was gone. THAT CAR IS ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER MUSCLE CARS, THEY BRING IN THE 30~50k RANGE. The boat on the other hand is worth 5~6k and can only be used when the weather is really warm and you have to haul the damn thing 200 miles to get to a decent lake. So Duane, think about this before you sell your prowler and get a hole in the water.

There were less than 400 (seems like I read 384) `71 Cuda Convertibles and in a Hi Impact color like Curious yellow (Nash Bridges) HOW MANY OF THEM WERE THERE TO START WITH I wish someone had that boat stuck up their as$ and I had my convertible back. KICK ME WHEN YOU SEE ME"

So in 27 years, I'll be complaining like you guys?

"I had a Vette C5!!!!" "I had a James Bond Edition Z3!!!" Should have kept them both!!!

At least I won't be saying "Should never have sold that Prowler"

AC....the real tear jerker here is the $30-50K.....it wouldn't even touch one these days.....they were in the several hundred thousand range last summer at the MOPAR Nationals....I saw one priced for $595,000.....I walked up thinking it was priced kinda high at $59,500....I had misread it for $59,500...he really was asking $595,000. for it.....dropped a turd right there :

In 1970 I purchased a 68 GTX Hemi 4-spd conv. from Feld Chevrolet here in St. Louis, I paid less than $2000
for it. One of my few street races with that car (completely stock) was against a 69 roadrunner 440 six-pack with headers and torqueflite. It was almost a dead heat if I remember correctly. we raced several times and we could not declare either car faster. After replacing the clutch twice I felt it was time to buy somthing else.

THANK LARRY,

I really need you to remind me of selling the `Cuda

I have had a lot of cars BUT I have never drove or even ridden in a HEMI car. I have had 340, 383, 440 and some brand "X" 396/375 HP

But from my understanding, the Hemi was not a good street motor. They were detuned to be able to run on the street. Difficult to keep in tune. This was a race motor they made for the street.

I seen a `69 Hemi Charger at the Mopar Nationals a few years back and it turned a 15.1, I would have taken it home and never showed my face again. But I also seen the guy driving it around Indy the night before.

If you are buying a car with the Hemi for the Value of the vehicle and don't want to drive it much it would be just about the most valuable car you could get your hands on.

If you are looking for a muscle car to drive the 440 would be the car to buy. Even though most of the 6 pac cars had the intake changed to a 4 barrel for better drivability, I believe there are people now that know how to tune them and fix the problems the factory design had.

There is no better show piece than a HEMI. If I could afford one I would have it. But 500 horse from the factory (I know they were rated at 425, but do you believe that?) is not something you can use on the road. Street racing today is too risky for me.

Both are very desirable, get the one that suits your wants

Now 400 HP might be able to be used o the street

Latest picture of the 405 HP 340 in my `67 Dart (taken by Larry Bell)

what a great bunch of information and stories...thanks.

so... when the 3.5 goes in the cat, i guess the motor of choice is the 440...dependable, fast, and not a million bucks... man that pistol grip 4 speed in a Kat would be so nice...wouldn't it be nice to see it done on one of the rod shows... picture it....440 magnum Kat...funny i find that more attractive than the Viper Kat concept...

nothin like the old school Dodge..

Bell - why did you have to mention that Wildcat's old '71 Cuda is now worth a half million? He might go to HomeDepot and buy a new rope!

Meyes - on a brighter note, it looks like the weather will be nice this weekend there,,,,,,,might want to get the boat out for a cruise?

Don't know why I'm jarring,,,,,,I sold four or five cars that would have secured my retirement if I would have kept them. But,,,I also have a boat!
