I have been told at the cancer center, Stanford that I need to find three Dr's for my future care, started in phone book under special listing found a GP no problem all went well, next came the Heart Man, cant see you without a refferal, what do you mean you want to interview our doctor? do you have insurance? sorry you will need an office visit and thats 300.00 by the way and on and on but finally got in to see this guy, now on to a cancer guy same questions except I need to bring all my records from two docs and two hospitals which he will review then decide if he wants to talk to me or not. and chager for his time to read it allby now Im wondering if when one of these guys go out to buy a new car if they have to set up an appointment to see the car and pay a fee ($300.00 seems standard) just to look at the car. and dont forget if you dont pay your deductable, its %18 interest. thank god in the old days all I ever did was fix cars. even though their modle never changes and ours did every year we keept up to the challange went to scholl bought new tool had vo free samples of drugs and never charged to talk to a potinal customer. curtis ------------------

I'm a doctor. I've had potential patients who wanted to interview and I've declined to do so. Here's why:If I agree to let a patient interview me, I'm taking time away from another patient who would pay for my services. It's kind of like going into a barber shop and saying, "I want you to cut my hair for free, and if I like the job you do, the next time I need a haircut I might come back to you." It costs a lot to run a medical practice. The building my practice is in used to be another medical practice. The former practice was not managed very well and closed down. I've run my office like a business and we provide medical service for thousands of patients. When we first started, we offered free blood pressure rechecks on patients. We soon found ourselves doing an ungodly number of BP rechecks for which we got paid nothing. If we hadn't abandoned that policy, we would have less time and money and therefore less capability of providing services for our patients. This is what economists call the "opportunity cost" of something. A doctor who lets a prospective patient interview him or spends time reviewing medical records for free will incur the opportunity cost of not seeing patients for whom he could be reimbursed.

I totaly understand what you are stateing and your concerns about operating for free however please consider what Im saying also after haveing almost been killed by two Dr's who missdiagnosed my case and sent me home with the answer we cant help you but if anything comes up we will call you, how should I feel? second Dr's read the same film and slide and saw what they didnt see.kinda like you taking your cat to just anyone instead of checking around for the best DC dealership and a qualified Prowler tech, right? as to the barber if you see your friends with nice looking hair cuts then that for sure would be the place to go if your looking give him a shot but if you see three men with shitty hair cuts are you going to go to there barber well maybe he just had a bad day and today will be better or you could be like me and loose all your hair to chemo. I wish you well my friend keep the smile on your face and drive it like you stole it curtis

Question? Didn't you have a family doctor before you got sick? Couldn't the hospital give you a list of a few Doctors they could recommend? I asked friends, relatives, in the past who they used for certain things and its worked out fine. First thing you should ask if they will except your insurance. I myself use someone who has been referred to me. I Go see him, if I like him great, if not I move on. I'm lucky living here in CT. Many good hospitals, doctors, dentists etc. Good luck, stay well.------------------

If you have found a family doctor that you trust and feel comfortable with, then I suggest that you ask him to refer you the the appropriate specialists. He most likely has built up a good relationship with certain specialist that he uses to refer his patients. This probably is the best way that you will find someone that will provide you with the appropriate medical care that you deserve and expect.

Curtis I can relate to a lot of what you are saying.Having been healthy all my life until one day I'm told told I have cancer.I didn't have a primary doctor but one person suggested I go to VA and did so.Thank god I was taken care of very well, throat removed left side, shoulder mussels plus had a stroke during surgery.Everthing has been as well as can be until Dec.03.My wife came down with same cancer as I.We had home paid for(lucky)and had to mortage it to pay $81,000.00 which was 20% since we didn't have secondary ins.Now just yesterday her cat and pet scans show a problem in her tongue.Believe me I know what you are going thru.God Bless and Good Luck

in my quest to find a new doctor or two the first heart doc I saw cost my insurance co $300.00 plus a $40.00 co-pay for about 15 minutes of his time and a girl to check my BP the interview went well but dont think that he is my man so will continue the search.now on to the cancer guy his office insisted I bring in my records and drop them off so he could review my past from two hospitals and three doctors after two days he calls me himself and we talk a few minutes then gives me back to his girl and I make my first appointment for 01/31/05 after Im done at Stanford cancer center and all this at no charge, so seems to me that he is my guy. so I guess my thoughts are wheather you pay or not will make no differance in your choice of dr's it seems to be a personialty thing and how you feel about the guy or gal your are INTERVIERWING. heck Dr. Sterling Id go with you just cause you own a Prowler you gotta be a cool guy and sounds like you care about the folks that come to see you and you dont over charge. block-buster
