Curious about your connection speed? Try this link, and post your results here...
I'm wondering which is faster DSL or Cable. I have added a DSL line here and also have cable, and my cable is blowing the DSL away...

What actually determines connection speed? I have dial up with a 56K modem, but usually only get a 26.4 connection. A handful of times I've had 28.8 but never higher. When it rains and the ground gets wet, or weather gets cold constricting the ground, or it gets hot (again causing the ground to move, or expand), I get connections anywhere from 4 to 19. Does it have to do with my ISP? My phone co. line? My modem? How many people are using my ISP at the time? In other words, who do I bitch at to get a better connection, cause Dell says its my ISP, my ISP says its my phone company, and my phone company pushes the problem off on my ISP again. Why have I been unable to do better than 28.8 (and usually only 26.4 with a 56K connection? (I have Pentium 4 processor, 1.8GHz, 256 RDRAM, & 64MB graphics card, if that tells anyone anything)
P.S. - Always had same issue, but weather related connection problems didn't start til tv cable company cut my phone line laying cable. Phone company came out and spliced together. Told them my problem and they said they SHOULD have (and will) lay a new cable. Instead, they sent someone out to bury the cable they never laid (contractor). Then they said oops, they'll send someone out to lay a new one, but never did. Yea, I know... it needs to be replaced, but still, why my slow connections otherwise, and who is responsible for giving me better? Or is it just normal, and the way things are?

Idive, based on what you've described it's the phone company's local loop. The wire between your computer and there first access point (usually a junction box near the street). Get them to run you a new direct line (or as the old phone guys would say a HOMERUN)and that should take care of your problem. They should do this at no cost to you. If you'd like a more technical and detailed answer let me know.

I have Bright House Cable and the latest speed was 2.4 Mbps yesterday on a best 3 Mbps system speed. However we just got word that they are increasing the speed to 5 Mbps system wide on 1/31. Wait till you see those long burn outs!

I'm averaging 2.5 to 3 mbps. I used to scream before the cable company started loading up the link. idive, have you gotten different numbers to dial into? Not that it will help much with dial up, but if you were to have DSL installed, you would want to have the phone co. run another bundle to the dmarc at the outside of your house. You may want to also check your inhouse wiring. Dial uses only 1 pair of the 2 pair that older houses normally have (the red/green) so if you had to you could use the other pair, you just need to make sure r/g on the jack is connected to the y/b pair.. If you have the old metal splitters in the house this can cause all sorts of problems.

Thanks for all the input! It's amazing how service quality varies around the country.

I wonder if processor speed has anything to do with the results of the test.
Some of you folks are getting some unbelieveable numbers. I'll post my results from the DSL PC next.

I figured I'd give DSL a try since they keep raising my cable rate. I pay nearly $60.00 for cable, and I just got verizon DSL for $29.95..

This might be one case where you actually do get what you pay for. I have emailed verizon and asked them to raise the speed on my DSL maybe I'll have a different result in a few days.

6. I have a 56K modem. Why is my result lower than 56.6 Kbps?

Your 56K modem has the ability to transfer up to 56.6 Kbps or 56,600 bps. But that doesn't mean that you can connect to the Internet at that speed. There are many factors involved, including the quality of your telephone line, the quality your telephone company's switches, and FCC regulations.
