Bell - I hate you,,,our gas just reached the $1.79 range. Most still in the 1.80's and a few raised their prices back to 1.99 for the holiday weekend.

Cost of Gas in Arizona?

Florida and Arizona on the only two states in the US that have no oil refining capacity. Arizona came close to buiding but what would have been the first new refinery built in 38 years. However, the environmenalists never let it through the permiting process.

The US is woefully short on refining capacity. If JUST ONE of the mega refineries (500-750 thousand barrels a day) goes down..we're all pretty much screwed.

Chromer - fully agree. Az. investors wanted to build a new refinery out in the desert, many miles from civilization, and all the government red tape has stopped it

As it is now, Az. gets 30% of gas from Texas and 70% from California. Not a good thing.

Chromer - how many megarefineries are there that produce that much. I know I am getting old and forgetful but I thought I read last year that Exxon was the only compnay to have a refinery with over 500,000 barrel per day capacity and Exxon and BP were the the only ones to have any over 400,000 capacity with two refineries each. Are any new refineries under construction at this time?

Paid $1.50 in Louisville 12/23. Wackos and EPA stop any new refineries from being built in the US thus increase our dependence on foreign countries not only for crude but also refining. In the 70's we refined most of our gasoline and related products now less than 30%. Thanks a liberal!

Marty, You're not an old fart, you're my age : , and I'm impressed with your knowledge of the hydrocarbon processing industry. There are less than two hand-fulls of super refineries, all located on the Gulf coast.

There are no new refineries planned or under consideration that I know of (Navajo tried for many years in Arizona, then walked away from it). The US is running at 98% of refining capacity. That means that there is just a 2% margin for scheduled maintenance. One major unscheduled outage means instantly higher prices and perhaps a shortage?

Demmand is skyrocketing and capcity is diminishing. Smaller refineries are unable to invest 100-500 million in equipment upgrades to produce EPA manadated low sulfur diesel by June 2006 / then low sulfur gasoline in '08.
Look for a significant Darwinian shutdown of those smaller plants (< 40 thousand BPD) before June '06. The US wil likely be forced to import more "finished products" to bridge the gap.

O1Prowler..YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET! Over the Road Diesel (locomotives are exempt) fuel will likely SKYROCKET when the low sulfur diesel standard is implemented in June '06.

Chomer is right on.

Not only are there no new refineries coming on stream, but many of the smaller older ones are being phased out.

Also very few pipeline permits are being issued for expansion/upgrades. Many water terminals are only remaining opened under "Grandfathered" permits/regs and can't be expanded. Distribution is going to be a major problem in the future even if refining capacity remained the same.

Just one more thing that Bush needs to look at REAL soon. When will these idiots here start to see that if we would have the refineries and more production here we could stop paying the Terrorists Rag Heads to use our money to blow us up.....

Premium dropped from $2.89 to $2.49 a gallon in San Diego in the last three weeks. Every day it seems a couple more pennies come off the price.

Still $2.80 for premium here. Off road, high sulfur diesel at $2.32. That's a fun price when the boat uses one gallon every 3/4 mile !!!!!!!

Would you guys be surprised to find out that Saudi Arabia is the leading producing oil county in the world? Probably not. But did you know the US was number two on the list?

An American lady, stranded on one of the tsunami hit areas, had to drive for 3 days and pay $200 for 3 gallons of gas :yikes: just to get to the airport to get home. We should all consider ourselves lucky with what we pay, compared to that.
