December 6th 1917 was the date of the Halifax Explosion, when 2 ammunition ships collided in Halifax harbor. this explosion killed or wounded 10,000 people. it was the largest man made explosion before the atomic bomb. Many of the homes that were not destroyed by the blast , caught fire and burnt when the wood and coal stoves were toppled and set the damaged homes on fire. the next day a freezing blizzard set in and made things even worse...many of the injured froze to death.

the people of Boston loaded up the trains and ships with relief supplies and sent them north to aid the stricken city. this has been a special bond we have kept alive all these years ... every year since 1975 Nova Scotia has sent a huge spruce ( i think ?) tree to Boston to decorate and display at christmas in city center as thanks for the assistance in our time of need.

i'm sure there is much info on the net regarding this event and is interesting to read...

Thanks neighbours !!

Man, that sounded horrible. http://www.mysteriesofcanada.com/Nova_Scotia/halifax.htm

Here is another ship disaster that hit closer to home (for me anyway).
http://www.local1259iaff.org/disaster.html

Note the picture of the 10,650 lb. anchor at the bottom of the link. That anchor was on the ship and BLOWN 1/2 mile away and buried 75 in the ground. That outta give you some idea of the force of the first explosion.

chromer...

note the last line in the link you posted..

"if it weren't for the americans, we would have starved to death"

my great grandmother was in school at the time... other than a few cuts, she was ok...there was so many people watching the fire that when it blew many were blinded by the flying glass.
