I've read the pro's and cons of both concerning burn in, brightness, lasting and need some real world advice from anyone that has either one. I know there will be better stuff coming down the pike next year at better prices.I will be using it for tv only and want the HD mode. I'm leaning towards LCD. Any opinions?
thanks, AL

LCD should be the choice. The Plazma has a half life and starts deteriorating with use. LCD doesn't deteriorate like the plazma.

Also depends on your application ... if thin is "in" then Plasma is the way to go ... mine is mounted on a tray ceiling with aswivel mount, an LCD would NOT have worked for us ... went with Sony -- it's very nice.

Unless you need the thin design of a plasma screen to hang it on a wall or perhaps over a fireplace, I believe the LCD would be a better choice. The picture, although not a sharp as plasma has better resolution than DVD's and in HD mode the picture is AWESOME. LCD's cost less and picture quality won't fade quickly like a plasma screen.

Butchcee - I have a 46" Samsung DLP model that came out in August of this year. The HD picture is primo! I looked at plasma and LCD and decided that for price, longevity of the picture quality and technology that DLP was the way to go. Plasma does have a great picture, but I'm not willing to put down that kind of money knowing I may need to replace the unit 7 or 8 years. I do not think "burn in" is that big of an issue with the plasma unless you leave your TV on 24 hours a day on the same channel. I watch football and baseball and the picture is incredible. I paid $3,200 for my DLP and I'm still convinced I made the right choice. Good luck!

Plasmas are the way to go but the price is high. The new ones do not have the burn-in problem, supposedly. LCD is less expensive. The real bargain is the DLP2 sets from Samsung, etc. Samsung was one of the first with DLP and the others are now joining the bandwagon. With DLP sets, the projection bulb is user replaceable, a big help but it is about $300 and you may have to replace it in about 3 years depending on usage.

Just saw on Ebay a bunch of Samsungs in 42-61 inch models and they were cheap compared to the stores. Most are in NY if that is close by. These sets are somewhat skinny compared to old rear projection sets @ about 19" for a 42". You really have to sit down in front of all of them at Circuit City to see for yourself. It really depends on the place you are putting it and how much you want to spend.

Hope this may help

Wally

Prices seem to be coming down all the time...what used to be $10000 a year ago is now about half that.I like the plasma but have no reason to jump because we had a custom cabinet built around my big screen(65" widescreen) in the rec room and it is working just fine!

I realize that rating picture quality is somewhat subjective, but I have a Hitachi 60" LCD I couldn't be any happier with. The clarity and depth is so astounding that on HiDef (1080i)channels like INHD it literally looks like you're looking through a window. Highly recommend it.

I shopped and shopped and shopped (was open to either a plasma or LCD) and for the money the Hitachi couldn't be beat. First of all the selection of 60" plasmas and LCDs isn't all that vast, and most of them are REALLY expensive. The hitachi lists for something like $4799, but if you're a smart shopper, you can buy one for between $3100 and $3400. I got mine at Circuit City for just over $3,000.

Check 'em out. You'll be glad you did : )

I have this Samsung 56" DLP and I can't say enough good things about it. I have not found one thing wrong with it -- the picture is just unreal. I'm really surprised DLP isn't getting the press that it deserves.

I spent a few hours looking around the net comparison shopping and looking for different points of view. Bob, the color wheel noise came up when researching a top of the line RCA set on a review site. Like you guys, the jury was out as to which maker and format was best with the final decision being your own personal choice.
thanks again--AL

Seems like everyone here is happy with whatever they purchased--and so am I. 51" Rear Projection ULTRAVISION is perfect for my needs AND size of room. If I had a LARGER room, I'd definitely have a 60" something--but 51" fits best now. And I also bought a 750-watt surround sound which is totally fan-damn-tastic to say the least...Onkyo 6-1 Home Theatre In a Box...highly recommend it, esp for the low cost...less than $600 bucks! OK, I'm starting to sound like a salesman. Sorry! But love all mine too!

I have a Sony 57" HDTV. I think the best bang for the buck is rear projection.

Why spend all the $$$ for a new HDTV that is small and you have to squint at?

I have also heard that the Plasma screens have a very limited life and ridiculously expensive.

On my HDTV, we did experience a bit of burn-in (watching regular TV on it had the black bars on either side caused uneven break-in of the screen.) Now when we watch movies, you can see both ends of the screen are a bit brighter.

When watching regular TV, you MUST either switch to GREY bars, or select ZOOM so the pic fills the screen!

Current plasma TV's have an expected life of about 5 years depending on use. They are basically non-repairable (they cannot be "refilled" as some claim). Within the next year they are expected to drop in price significantly, mostly because of competition. DLP vs. LCD is a toss-up. Depends on your personal preference. $300 repair on a $3000 TV is not bad considering they are expected to last 5-7 years, again depending on use.

We have a three month old Sumsung 42" Plasma...it is awesome. We've heard about the supposed short life...but after speaking with Samsung technical folks, it seems it may be caca. They say the plasma is designed for 30-35,000 hours...hmmm how many Everbody Loves Raymond reruns is that anyway? Seriously, we went with the slim design as we mounted it on a wall...put in a terrific JVC 7.1 Digital Theater System in andf the sound makes my EYES twitch...man DVD's seem to come off the screen. God , I'm regressing into a little kid again..oooooh noooooooo!
