My son has a dual axle trailer that I would like to use for Niagra and the Smokey Mountain trips. Problem is....the trailer has some really old tires that are dry rotted and cracked. I would like to replace the tires before the trips but I have a question:

Can I use regular car tires (P205R70-14) or do I have to use 6 ply trailer tires?

I would like to pick up a set of "take offs" to save money but I don't want to cause a safety issue. I know that trailer tires would be the best solution, I just want to know if using car tires would be dangerous. (I think the tires that are currently on it are just car tires)

Ken, I really think you want 6 ply trailer tires. I had to replace a couple on the Nevada trip, guy told me he wasn't legally able to put regular tires on, even though he didn't have trailer tires in stock. I put on a couple "TrailerMaster" tires, might be Goodyear, about 80 buck each installed. I would certainly make sure I had a spare.

Ken: When I had my open trailer, I always ran regular car tires on it with no problem. When I switched to the enclosed trailer I switched to trailer tires only.

let's see, a guy spends big $$$ for chrome front end, has some really cool exhaust, and wants to save a few bucks on tires???????? this confuses me, why would you want to put car tires on a trailer???, WHAT IF, the tire blows and the trailer gets out of control and causes the tow vehicle to get out of control then flips the trailer. DO YOU THINK THIS MIGHT RUIN YOUR WEEKEND??????? AND FOR LESS THAN $100 difference in trailer tires over car tires.....it doesn't add up for me.....

you can take the wheels off the trailer and take then to have new tires installed. put on the size closest to the ones on it now, BUT check the load rating on them and see if the Prowler plus the weight of the trailer will overload them. An other thing to think about with a trailer and how close the axles are together is the twisting effect when turning.

OPEN UP THE WALLET SQUEAKY AND GET THE GOOD STUFF

Whoa....Larry....you really know how to put things into perspective! You're right....what was I thinking. I'm already paranoid about trailering the car, no sense worring about the tires too! Somehow I knew this was going to be the answer. Thanks !!

Having been a Boy Scout and their motto is "Be Prepared" and I like to do just that. ( have you seen what all I carry in the trailer?) At work they claim their motto is "Safety First" and I feel this is important at work and at play, nothing like a something going wrong to ruin a good trip.

For what it's worth.... I have three work trailers that hold a weight of about 4000 to 5000 lbs continously. All three have GOOD car tires on them. We pull them at least 100 miles a day each total. Never had any problems. I think it boils down to ..make sure the tire you buy, car or trailer, is rated for the weight you put on it.

Ken. What the h*ll are you doing? Drive the car, that is why it has it's own engine. LOL
