On May 21, you can drive a lap on the famed Brickyard for an admission fee of $ 5. Unfortunately I cannot make it. I sure wish I could even if I was only going to drive 25 MPH.

Ed....
Many years back, the Hoosier Swap meet was held at the track.....one of the days each year(Sunday ?) they let the show cars go out for a couple of laps a group at a time.....back then I had a '69 Dodge Daytona and several years in a row I got to drive around the Brickyard with other MOPARS...quite a thrill !!! one year in particular there were nearly 70 of the "Winged Warriors" at the track and it was a magnificent sight....row after row of Daytonas and Superbirds....we ran speeds from 50 to 100 mph on the backstretch.....also one year there was a "Winged Warrior" meet in Indy that drew 30 to 40 cars....I remember like yesterday how these winged cars took over the interstate loop that day....traffic was stopped EVERYWHERE to see these winged cars pass...we were running 3 abreast and over 10 rows deep at times...it was like the start of a Nascar race....we looped Indy all the way around in formation at speed....Daytonas and Superbirds are probably the only car I ever owned to elicit more looks, stares than a Prowler....I had 2 Daytonas and 1 Superbird for a period of about 20 years....fantastic memories....a few years ago my son and son in law took a couple of my Vipers to the current track tour day...they were disappointed...the cars hardly moved....they sat still for long periods of time, then moved a few lengths, than sat again....wasn't really what you would call driving....many people walked the track that day and beat the cars around the track by a long distance.....I have a store a couple of blocks north of the track, so I go to the track every once in a while just to see the museum and look at all the history there....fantastic place to visit, I just don't have much interest in the race anymore....just lots of great memories.....

If you have the chance to participate in this, you should!!! Bob has had several opportunities to drive the track at Indy during his career with the Cincinnati Zone.

I was lucky enough, back in '91, to have had a chance to ride around the track. Bob has known Carroll Shelby for many years and Carroll offerred to give me a ride around the track when the Viper was the pace car. His top speed for this several lap ride was only 140 mph, but it was the opportunity of a lifetime to get a ride with this legend!! We've also had numerous opportunities to tour the private museum which includes all of the past Indy 500 pace cars. It is an unbelievable collection!

I think it was 1966(Graham Hill was out house guest and I think he won that year)my Dad took mom and me for a spin around the track after the race, of course with the security chasing us(geez it does run in the family),,,Thanks Dad for the memories.
Never miss a chance like this,,,

I have been around:

  • Indy: Limo 13 years old, Security chasing Pops
  • Michigan: Corvette Club, 16 years old
  • Indianapolis Raceway Park road course: Corvette Club 17 years old, came in 4th out of 17 cars
  • Del Mar, IMSA track, Security chasing me
  • Riverside: Days before the start of the Mall, Porsche(spun out over 100) 36 years old
  • Phoenix: Pick Up, couple of years back
  • Fontana: too old, POA
  • Texas Motor Speedway (twice): even older, POA, again Security chasing me just once
