Tired of having things get caught or broken under your deck lid hinges?
I have the solution!

Only one bolt per hinge needs to be removed to install the guards.
There is no need for re-adjustment of the decklid.

I expect to sell these for about $20.00 per pair if painted and $15.00 per pair if unpainted.

Should these be sold painted or unpainted?
If painted, should they be Satin Black or Dark Grey?
Does it matter if they're made of aluminum or steel?

Good idea Larry- I had to switch from glass 1.5 liter Maker's Mark to plastic bottles!

As far as paint, since all trunk area carpets are the gary, I would try to match that.

Another Lord of Wisdom product! While I rarely have a problem shutting the lid, I see that many owners do and this would surely help them.

Is the one in the picture steel? Looks good enough for me, to keep the cost down. I know you'll want to get one set 100 point chromed for Mayes, lol.

Your wheels are always turning,,,,,good idea!

Great idea Larry, I want a set. Check out having them Powder Coated in a wrinkle finish its tough wont scratch or peel and its cheap if you do a bunch. If you can not find a cheap source let me know the guy I use does a great job and is real cheap if you pay cash.

Not to start a fight but, what gets caught or broken in the hinge area?

What would happen to that same item if it were on top of this cover?

It seems to me that if someone isn't paying attention when closing the trunk lid (without these) they probably wouldn't with them either and could still break stuff.

I never carry anything in my trunkette so it's not an issue for me but, maybe alot of other folks do and are breaking stuff.

Good idea if it works for them, I guess.

Great Idea. I would buy a set (painted). Since they are an extension of the body and/or hinge I think they should be painetd to match.

Very Cool, paint them to match the carpet so you don't have to paint them '9 DIFFERENT COLOURS', make them a light guage steel(cheaper) and you can make a large batch. This way will take away all the colour matching problem in painting and shipping the correct colour to the car. There is a hammer coating that would look sharp better than a painted yellow, for instance, which might chip and look like H3ll.....

JMO

Again, very cool idea and I have smashed many a thing in there, sorry I wont need one after the Stereo and NOS mods, we will have no room.

Great idea Larry! There have been several times when I have had my flag caddies or my California Duster get caught up under the hinges and have almost closed the trunk lid without seeing them. Let me know when they are complete. Tami

Good Idea Larry

I would agree with Bob about powder coating in gray or satin black, (ONE SIZE FITS ALL)

I have had the tip of umbrella under it and other things. It does happen no matter how careful you are

Put me down for a set, if you do not want to paint them that is OK with me I'll do it....hummmmmm, CHROME, DID SOMEONE SAY CHROME?

I've been working all day on the new products and plan on welding the KatRacks together this Sunday.
The aluminum for the KatRack trays will be here Monday and I expect to get it sheared, punched and bent by Tuesday. I'll be fabricating the steel hinge guards on Tuesday and Wednesday and expect to have them headed to the paint shop on Thursday.
I'm leaving for vacation next Thursday and am hoping to have everything into the paint shop before I leave. Hopefully it will all be back from the paint shop when I arrive home and I can start packaging and shipping by mid May or sooner.

After doing a time study and cost analysis today, I've decided that I priced the hinge guards much too low. After I get the cost of painting and packaging I'll establish a selling price.

I made a change to my hinge guard design today that will now allow you to install the guards without removing any bolts. This change makes the installation much faster and easier.
The hinge guards will be made of 16 Ga. Electro Galvanized Steel and powdercoated with satin black polyurethane.
Aluminum hinge guards can be made by special order for those wishing to polish or chrome them.

I've decided to paint the hinge guards satin black.
This will help to save some cost since I am already painting the KatRacks satin black. Everything being the same color makes a larger batch and a lower cost per piece for the powdercoating.
Unpainted parts will be available to those who wish to paint their own color of choice.

Larry - for those of us that actually use our Prowlers as cars, these are a great idea. Especially with my nitrous bottle in back, I am constantly cramming things in any available space left.

Gary C - if he makes them from steel instead of aluminum the extra weight might cost you .001 seconds at the track.

Larry --

Product looks good. Would like a set. IMHO you should make from aluminum and, as specified, optioanl paint (my choice would be painted).

No fear here Mark!
Great ideas and designs but this is where inspiration meets reality.

I deal with designers everyday that have great talent but have no concept of what it takes to produce their designs.

****Picture deleted per Mark's request****

Mark,
As I stated before, I like your designs but they are not cost effective in small quantities. This design while nice, will require the use af hard tooling dies to manufacture it or it will require a lot of time to hand fabricate them. Sorry buddy but it's just not cost effective in small quantities. One other point is that maybe you should get the full story before you make assumptions. You have no idea what my plans for this product are and in fact these parts are part of a bigger plan. They were initially designed to hold my KatRack in place while stored in the trunk. The flat surface and the height of my hinge guards is required to give the rack a seating surface and also allow a means of locating the tray and securing it for travel.
As the hinge guards evolved I noted their practicality and dual function. I decided to make the guards as a stand alone product since I feel that most owners will find these a very useful and almost required update to their Prowler.

*****Picture deleted per Mark's request*****

Mark,
Again, great idea and design but also again here is where reality sucks.

Your design has a few problems that will need to be addressed,,,,,,
Where can I find crescent shaped luggage?
A carry-on bag 14" x 24" (airline spec) will not fit your rack.
Your design will require extensive metal forming and heli-arc welding which will make the cost skyrocket.
A hitch receiver 20" or so behind the bumper creates a very long moment arm which will not be capable of towing a trailer with the recommended 100# maximum tongue weight. (I already had this idea but scrapped it early on).
Why would a person need to use a luggage rack and their trailer simultaneously?

Mark,
Thank you for all of your suggestions but I feel that both of my newest products will serve the needs of the Prowler well.

My objective when I started this project was to build a functional rack at a reasonable cost that will allow the owners to transport carry-on bags easily and be able to store the unit in their trunk.

I feel that I have accomplished my goals with both of these new products and am very confident that others will feel the same.
