Greetings all, I have a questions for the Mopar musclecar enthusiasts on this forum. As many of you know, I have a 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda 440 Six Pack with the original Chrysler A833 4-speed manual transmission that is came equipped with and the 3.54:1 (Track Pack) gears in the big ‘ole Dana 60 rear axle. I have grown to hate driving on the interstate with this car because of the high RPMs required to run highway speeds. Currently I run at 3,000 RPM just to get 60 mph. I heard about this Keisler 5-speed conversion that is offered for these old Mopars and was wondering if anyone has tried their kit out. If so, what are your thoughts on it? I am most concerned with the drop in RPM a 5-speed tranny would offer. But, I am also concerned with durability and what if any performance improvement this transmission would offer. I would of course keep my original 4-speed transmission as it is a matching number’s car. So, if you are a Mopar musclecar purist, please don’t despair. Anyway, if you or anyone you know that has these kits would give me some opinions, I would appreciate it. Here is a link to their site: http://www.keislerauto.com/Mopar_new/Transmission/transmission.htm Thanks, ------------------ |

Why change trans.you must know the auto.for your car has a 323:1 rear which will lower your RPM,and I believe would be a cheaper route.Just a though. Gene |

Well, first off, my ‘Cuda has a 4-speed manual transmission and my car is completely setup for a manual tranny so an auto would be no help for me. I am looking for a drop in kit where I would perform no modifications (cutting, welding, etc) and I could remove it if on the extreme outside chance I would ever have to sell the car for nay reason. Then, I would still have the matching number’s transmission to put back in. The 3.23:1 gear ratio was only available stock in the 8-3/4” Chrysler rear axles not the Dana 60. My dad’s Hemicuda had 3.23:1 originally and it wasn’t much help in the RPM department. It also hurt off the line acceleration, not that I race my car or anything, but it’s nice to have hehe! My car has 3.54:1 gears. My purpose with the 5-speed was to add a fifth gear with a low overdrive ratio without sacrificing performance. The Keisler tranny comes stock with a .68:1 overdrive gear. Their speed charts show that with their transmission kit, the car would run at 3,000 RPM at 97 mph instead of 60 mph. That’s quite a difference and much less strain on the old big block. Thank you for your reply and keep the suggestions coming. I appreciate all opinions anyone has. ------------------ |

My Mopar mags have done several articles on this transmission and a complete install. They rave about it. Complete bolt in for E-B bodies. Solid transmissiom and can take high hp motors with no problems. I would not hessitate to do this install. Quality parts, easy install and everything fits as it was engeneered for this exact application. Price......very resonable. |

Why not take a different tack. Keep the car original, use your existing 4-speed and rear gears. Add a Gear Vendors overdrive. It is a 22% overdrive that will cut your 3,000 rpm at 60 MPH down to 2,340. I'd recommend keeping your existing drive shaft and having a shorter one built. These things work. Used one behind a 700#/ft diesel at 30,000# GCW for 75,000+ miles with no issue. John Schneider just added one to his personal General Lee hemi car to run the Silver State Classic road race. Call Gear Vendors at 800-999-9555. Why settle for a five speed when you can have an eight speed with two more in reverse! |
