My g/f has 2002 Montero Sport with 22,500 miles and the brake warning light as come on for no reason. The brake fuild level is ok, parking brake is down and the brakes feel fine.

The Mitsu dealer says the light comes on at 22k mile so that you come in for standard brake service. The dealer wants $125 to hook it up to the computer and if the brake cylinder is bad they want another $300+. They also said the brakes might need replacing ($$$$) which is doubt full at 22.5k miles (mostly highway).

Any one know the cause of this issue and how to resolve it w/o having to pay out the butt?

Thanks,

How do they perform the reset? Do they actually hook up to the CPU to infom you what is exactly wrong if anything?

Spoons, so far I have not had to use the services so I do not have firsthand knowledge. Several local companies have the message on their marquees that they will check your dashboard light messages free. I think even a few of the chain muffler shops offer the free service. I would make a local phone call and ask them.
