If any of you got this month's Car and Driver, the new Z4 has a subwoofer tube that extends from the exhaust manifold and transfers the low frequency vibrations right into the cabin! Very strange feature. They said it sounds cool, but at 5,500 RPM, the drone is too much. On another note, they showed at SEMA a noise cancellation system that can eliminate engine noise by projecting wavelengths of sound opposite of the engine sound to cancel each other out.....but another feature it has to offer is if you put the frequency slightly out of phase, you can make your V-6 sound like a V-8. I wonder what the Prowler would sound like with this in effect? |

Reprinted from Car & Driver.com about the Z4 "So, what about that engine Muzak thing? Here's how it works: There's a black plastic tube about three inches in diameter connected to the intake system between the air filter and engine. The tube wends its way rearward to the fire wall, connecting just above the driver's footwell. It is, in effect, a subwoofer for the engine. You know a tube subwoofer — a large-diameter speaker mounted in one end of a tube that produces big fat low-frequency sound waves and makes your license plate vibrate. Except for this engine-amplifying system, the cabin is surprisingly serene. Top-up motoring is markedly quieter than in the old car. The interior design also has a visual serenity. There's a frosty elegance to materials, including a dash-wide swath of brushed aluminum and various satin-finish metal bits. It calls to mind the Z8. Secondary controls are arranged in simple-looking and easy-to-operate clusters." |

quote: This has been around for years. I think they were trying (maybe did) use this in stealth aircraft and were experimenting with it on attack helicopters. I'm not sure how long ago it wsa that I was reading this but, suspect it was about 7-10 years ago. Pretty cool stuff. |

WG...Exactly what I was referring to! YF....Yes, it has been in development for a while now for military applications, but when will we actually see it in frivolous auto applications? Wouldn't it be cool if we could dial in any engine sound for whatever mood we are in? "Hmmmmm...I think today will be a Ferrari sounding kind of day. Dial in setting number 6 please..." |
