Read an article in the paper today that says chevy is going to produce 14-15000 ssr's a year! Doesn't that sound like a lot for a niche car! DC only made 11000+ of ours in 5 years.

Katilac,
Must be a misprint. Take off a zero and you're probably there.

There are a lot of GM diehards out there, so I suppose they'll sell them. But quite frankly, I don't think they are very good looking, and maybe even border on ugly. They sure don't look as good as our Prowlers, or even the retro styled PT Cruiser. Just my opinion.

I'd like to see one in person before I decide if I like the look. The photos don't look too bad.....At least it is some attempt by GM to try styling that doesn't create nausea for a change (Vettes and camaros excluded).

Looking at the new Monte Carlo actually induces nausea in me! The ugliest car since the Matador. (Who remembers those?)

I am also holding off on judging it until I see it in person. From recent pictures I have seen, to me it looks like a New Beetle Convertible with a pickup truck bed. I give credit to Chevrolet for going outside the box and stepping away from their typical "lemming" designs, but the new SSR sure doesn't even slightly give me the same feelings I felt the first time I saw pics of the Prowler.

GM has always been very conservative. however, with some management changes over past few years and now Bob Lutz on board, I think you'll see more trendy designs coming out of GM. I'm still undecided on the SSR.

I don't think GM really builds niche cars. They may call it limited or exclusive but, they always build a bazillion of whatever. Even with the corvette, the produce something like 35,000 a year. Some niche.

Small trucks are a hot seller with kids and now one comes along with a convertible top. Are their any others in that market yet? I suspect (depending on price) they could sell a million of them.

Bob Lutz is a god in the automotive world. He cuts through red tape like no other GM and produced a running Pontiac Solstice from scratch in less than 2 months!

He also was not afraid to call the Aztek ugly!

I'm holding on my comments on the SSR until I see one in person. With Chevy tradition and GM backing, it could be a success.

Some information on the SSR from a post by Niteman on a previous thread. They would have prbably sold more ig they had not made the following changes. JMO

The SSR concept chassis had to be scrapped for cost.
It will be built on an existing SUV chassis.(Blazer I think)
It will miss its targeted weight....by about 1000 pounds.
The engine will not have over 400 horses....instead 290.
It will scorch the pavement to 60mph in a blistering 7.5 seconds!
Furthermore it will zoom through the quarter in 15.6!
It will miss the 30,000 dollar target price. Base price for now is 38,500.00 and might be higher.
The V-8 will sound like a V-8 though. They got us on that one!

Am I missing something here? Oh well, I scanned the first test of the PT Cruiser turbo with automatic. 0-60 in 7.2 and quarter mile in 15.1 and the stick will be even quicker.
Of course I had to pry that out of the end of the article.

The only thing that G.M.may have going for them is their powertrains. As far as looks go,they have been more than conservative to say the least. As far as the looks of the S.S.R.-the jury's still out.One gorgeous car they do have coming out is the Cadillac XLR(very heavy price tag).

The yellow SSR concept we saw last year at Woodward Dream Cruise was pretty nice, but no Prowler in looks. THh V8 is a plus, the storage space is far greater than in the kat, and the folding hard top is a great touch. Would I trade my Prowler for one - absolutely not. But I imagine they will sell far more then 11,697 of them.

Yes, but put a turbo, some headers, cold air intake, on this stock v-8 and then see who's the bell of the ball.

When chrysler showcased it's howler concept car (a possible replacement for the prowler) it too had a v-8 and a stick (I think) and it's 0-60 time was about a half second slower then a stock prowler.

The difference is, with the mods you could make to that engine, you'd have a real beast.

BT, I think the SSR was designed and developed BEFORE Lutz/
Not 100% sure though.

I don't think the number of cylinders has that much bearing on peformance anymore. If you have watched the NOPI Nationals on TV lately you will see 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder cars running times in the 7's. For example a Mitsubushi 2 litre dynoing with 900+ HP. Now I am not a rice burner advocate, but you have to be impressed. And if they can do it to a rice burner, we could do it to a Prowler V6 with enough money invested. I still love the BIG V8's and the sound they make. But when you can get 900HP out of a smaller and lighter motor and put it in a lighter car. Well you do the math.

Here is quote from the NOPI Drag Nationals site that says it all. Especially the part about technology.

The engineering that went into the Osofast Eclipse and the ET’s it could produce echoed the words of Bullish Racings Ara Arslanian, “technology will be a substitute for cubic inches.” Brent Rau has recently made passes in the 7’s with a the 2.0 liter and the small displacement will provide him a weight advantage going into the 2003 season over his 6 cylinder 3.0 liter rivals.

I like the SSR but CHROME wheels would make a HUGE difference in it's appearance, just like it did for the Prowler. JMO
