Okay - here's the scenario. Jamie will be leaving for college next year and we would like for her to have a new vehicle to take with her so we won't have to worry about her driving by herself and having any breakdowns. She really likes the Liberty and I've checked into their ratings with the NTSB, which are really high - 5 star crash, etc. The price is also good, but wanted to see if anyone has one and how they like them? She has a 92 Olds 98 now fully decked out with all of the bells and whistles and is a great car for her first (I know, I'm mean putting her in such a big old boat, but at least I knew it wouldn't crumple if she got hit or hit someone else), but she really wants an SUV since she loves driving our expedition and being up high enough to see. Any thoughts on the Liberty? Any help would be great appreciated! Thanks, Tami

My wife liked the looks so we looked seriously at them. She ended up buying a Dodge Durango with leather and a 5.9 liter V-8 for not much more then a fully decked out Liberty. It also gave us a 3rd row of seats and the ability to trailer something like 8000 lbs. Also, she typically always has two other people in the car with her (our kiddos) so more room was better and she was diametrically opposed to getting a minivan. I could find no faults with the Liberty myself, and I looked pretty hard to find any. This message has been edited by YellowFever on 11-21-2002 at 09:27 AM

We have an 02 Jeep Liberty Sport and love it! We got it in January of this year and have put 15,000 miles on it. We've only had it back to the dealer for oil changes, ... (i.e., no warranty repairs.) The car seems very solid and very well built. It has the select-shift (I think that's what they call it) xfer case that gives us a full-time 4-wheel drive setting. First snow, we put it in full-time 4-wheel drive and leave it there all winter. We live in the mountains of northern Utah so we needed something with 4WD. We also wanted something we could tow 4-down behind our motorhome, which the Jeep is great for. We went from a Mercedes ML-320 to the Jeep, mainly so we could tow it behind our MH. To be honest, we like the Jeep MUCH more than the ML. IMHO the Jeep has much better build quality and actually rides and handles better. The ML did have several things in its favor though, namely the ESP (electronic steering program) and braking system. If I have a concern with the Liberty, it would be it's tippy-ness. Ours is one of the original models. Somewhere mid-stream in the 02 model year, they lowered them by a inch or so which supposedly greatly reduced it's tippy-ness.

The Durango is much roomier and nicer inside than the Liberty. My wife compared them, and the Durango won, hands down. Price wasn't much higher than the Jeep, either.

Hi All: Thanks for the replies. I just really wanted to know if anyone had one and what they thought about ownership. Jamie will never be towing anything and lord knows between the Expedition with the towing package and Ken's truck we have enough towing capacity and she really doesn't need a ton of room. I was more concerned about handling, how well it was built after driving for awhile, etc. Sounds like DRF is very pleased with theirs. Thanks CJ, we will definitely be getting with Bob closer to the time of buying. That would be great!! I might as well let her drive what she has now and spend less on insurance, etc. until we need to make the move. Thanks for the info from everyone! Tami

As I said, IMHO, the Liberty is a very well built vehicle. If you buy a left-over 02, I'd check the build date. I think the height change I mentioned occurred in May. If you're not interested in the car's off-roading ability, I'd make sure to get one with the lowered suspension change for the stability on the highway. Your dealer should know more about whether a particular 02 has the lower suspension or not.

DRF: Thank you for your comments, they were very helpful. Ken went ahead and drove one and said the new one felt more stable to the ground, so he must have driven one that had been lowered. She loves the interior and everything on it and does not like the Durango at all. I just wanted to hear from someone that actually owned one and what they thought and I love the fact that she can pop it into 4x4 if necesssary. I appreciate it. We will be checking it out soon and I will be calling Bob and CJ too! Thanks again! DRF, Bob and CJ! Tami This message has been edited by TFischer on 11-21-2002 at 02:09 PM

Friend of mine bought one for his daughter, 24 years old, single, 5'8-10...it is perfect for her needs, lifestyle and she absolutely loves it...she commutes in the car daily across Indy and especially likes the vision from the Jeep vs a regular car....
