Bob and I arrived Saturday, Nov. 1 in Las Vegas for the 2002 SEMA (Special Equipment Marketing Association) show. DaimlerChrysler was the Manufacturer of the Show this year and totally blew everyone away with their displays. Chrysler’s new show display was awesome and featured many new image vehicles. Bob, himself, had 106 vehicles in the show, 43 newly built for this SEMA show. We stayed extremely busy, starting from Saturday afternoon when we arrived to Friday! It is always interesting to watch the displays being put together and magically transform the whole convention center. It’s hard to comprehend how they can get all of it put together in a matter of a few days.

We spent Saturday and Sunday choosing vehicles for placement in the various DC displays. In addition to the main booth, DC also had the new Mopar Speed Shop display (an actual working speed shop) and the Branded Showroom display (what the dealer showroom of the future should look like). The Speed Shop display was 110,000 sq. ft alone! It featured high performance vehicles, three of Mopar’s race team tractor/trailers and race cars and a working speed shop. Two of the race team displays were actually working on their vehicles getting ready for the next race. In the work area, they were actually building engines, etc.

On Monday, there was an Innovative Luncheon in the Speed Shop for all who had an invitation to attend. Dieter Zetsche was the featured speaker and talked about the direction DC is pursuing with product, etc. A fabulous lunch was served in the Speed Shop. On Monday evening, Primedia held an invitation-only reception in the Speed Shop. It was great to see everyone again.

Tuesday brought the official opening of the show. With the new South Hall open, the show was half again as large. There was a lot of walking all week and lots of booths to visit. There is an unbelievable amount of aftermarket products in the marketplace for all types of vehicles. I spent Tuesday judging on the DC Design Office Judging team. We judge tier 1 (vehicles) and tier 2 (parts) and give out four awards for each tier.

Every day is busy. Checking on vehicles, talking to vendors, etc. and trying to walk the show ourselves. Bob brought in George Barris for the show and we had him do an autograph session. We also had John Schneider (Dukes of Hazzard and Smallville) there who had his own personal car in one of the displays. We gave him a tour of the Chrysler displays and he did an interview on Hot Rod TV. Very nice guy who is very interested in cars. He does a lot of racing himself.

Wednesday evening, we attended the SRMA Banquet. Bob is the DC rep for SRMA. On Thursday, it was more of the same and Dieter Z. asked Bob to give him a tour of the displays. I tried to walk more of the show. Unfortunately, there isn’t much that would apply to Prowlers, even though I kept an eye out for products. Thursday night was the annual SEMA banquet and we were the host for the DC employees. Entertainment was Rita Rudner and Louie Anderson. They were fantastic!!!

We did get to visit with Cliff Watson, Jay Harris, Steve Faint, Marvin Holas, Rick Beyes and Christy Wade. On Friday, we played hookey and took the day to walk around and see some of Vegas. We arrived home late on Saturday, tired and glad that another SEMA show is over!!!

Here is a link to the scrapbook of pictures that I took of some of the vehicles at the show.

CJ - that's the part I understand. What I would like to learn is how to do some of the things that have been done to these display cars! I really like the orange and silver custom roadster.

PK - I don't know if I would put round lights on a Prowler or not.

Hey PK - it's nice tho hear there some people who don't think I am totally nuts! I grew up with older cousins that had street rods and I always thought the Prowler would look cool with round lights and no front bumpers!
