Somewhere, somehow, I have failed to guide my offspring in the values and beliefs of the red-blooded American hot-rodder. I have been relentlessly analyzing my performance as a parent over the past 10 years trying to figure out where I went wrong.
I should have recognized the problem last year when we attended the L.A. Auto Show. My wife and I ogled the concept cars and production sports cars. We spent more than the required amount of time at the aftermarket equipment booths. But our 9 year old son did not perk up until we got to the mini-vans. We had a tough time moving on the next display because we could not extract him from a mini-van. He crawled all throughout the interior and had to play with each button and knob. I guess when you are used to being chauffeured to elementary school in Prowlers and fine old Corvettes, the prospect of riding in a mini-van might be quite appealing…NOT.
Then something happened the other day that hit me like a ton of bricks. My son and I were riding in our 1989 Oldsmobile sedan. It is a fine piece of motoring hardware with a scant 188,000 miles on it. As fine an automobile you have never seen. I’m sure it is just now fully broken-in and ready for another 200,000 miles to boot. As I patted the dashboard I commented to my son than in a short 6 years this fine example of Oldmobile engineering know-how might be his first car. I noted the fact that my first car was an Oldsmobile and it was fitting that his first car might also be the same make…to which he replied “No Dad. I want something fast, like a HONDA.” Woe is me.

I feel your pain ... and only hope and pray that my little princess desires something in Chevy Blue when she is old enough to drive (American at least!).

Blame it on Hollywood, its all of those damned "wanna be" car movies that brainwash the poor children. We need more movies like Vanishing point and Bullitt.....where they have REAL cars.

I don't think it will too long until all the manufacturers are "global" rather than tied to one country.

That really isn't so bad. We agree with him, but then, we just like a variety of vehicles including our (very fast) HONDA! Four cylinder, 240hp and soon to be supercharged.

Ask your son if this is what he wants:

Real Rod Air Patrol; Graphics by Balistek Designs; ($8) Chrome grille; Chrome
tire valve-stem covers; Painted rear bumper lettering; Prowler Pro Gears; Synthetic

SheepskinExpress Sheepskin Seatcovers; Grille Light; Pinstriping by Bo Boring;

Well, I've got an 18 year old that wants a Jag (she now has a 92 Olds 88 (only because I couldn't find a 70's style electra - you know the kind that doesn't crumple when it gets hit for their first car), an eight year old that was very upset with me when I traded in our full size Chevy van on the Expedition because she wanted it for her first car - go figure, and a five year old son that wants a Prowler. Thankfully after riding in the Prowler the eight year old now wants one too! Tami

My advice is get rid of the kids while they are small and still relatively inexpensive. It only gets worse as they get older. Strangely enough, grandkids seem to be fine and don't really get on my nerves at all. Insanity is heredity, you get it from your kids.

Thanks for the insights Ed, couldn't agree more. Kids are gone (not when small and still are expensive) and first grandkid on the way, so it's nice to know they won't be as nerve racking.

Marc, some of the classic questions so far have been, "Grandpa where did all of your hair go?" It fell out. "But where did it go?" Go look in your daddy's shower drain.
"Grandpa why do you have all of those lines on your face?" I'm old and your daddy and his three brothers helped put them there.
"Grandpa, I realllly like your car!" (She is my favorite NOW.)

I guess I did O.K but I owe it to my dad for bringing me up the right way. I had to buy my first car a 73 Pontiac Catalina 4 door ($200) this was a fine auto 400 4 barrel for a boat this thing was fast and I could haul all the cheerleaders to boot! but this fine ride only lived 5 short months, then dad and me went shopping he picked out a 76 Mustang 2 with a 4 banger and a automatic ( $2500 ) I on the other hand picked out a 73 Charger 400 4 barrel big fat tires jacked up in the air 8 track tape player ($1500), well my dad went with my choice and came under fire from mom, grand ma, grand pa this was one of the best cars I ever had, got the car when I was 16 sold it when I was 24 put 185,000 miles on it and got $1500. So when my son starting thinking of his first car at the age of 13 we went out and found a worn out 80 Camaro ($300) and for 3 1/2 years he and I worked on it redoing the body and running gear, he got his liecense before the car was done so he drove my truck and managed to put a dent in every corner all in 4 short months, he puts the Camaro on the road drives it for 2 years and never puts a scratch in it. So the way I see it let them have what they want but make them earn it as they will take much better care of it. My son now has a 97 Camaro R/S and my daughter has a 99 Grand Am S/E ( but has her eye on my 57 Chevy).

My oldest son, who reads this Board, has just chastised me because I have failed to mention that we have two sons. He is currently stationed at Kunsan AB, S. Korea. I am supposed to mention that he owns a REAL Mopar....a 1970 Charger 500 (383 Magnum).

Pumpkin, My son does not recognize your sporty wheels as an actual Honda. He is thinking about a Civic...3 inches off the ground with a 5 foot tall wing and a "juice can" muffler than makes it sound like a machine intended for mixing margaritas.
LOL

LOL

That's too bad. Now we'll have to find someone else to give the S2000 to in 5 or 6 years .

I was a motorhead child of the sixties....always drove hot cars and never understood people that didn't appreciate fast cars....well, I ended up with a pair of kids(daughter 27, son 24) and neither of them really has any great interest in cars other than transportation....they both used to go to car shows with me when they were kids, just the novelty I guess....as they grew older neither had any interest to speak of in cars at all....I have ALWAYS had a HEMI, SIX-PAKS, SIX BARRELS, winged cars(Daytona/Superbirds), Corvettes of every generation available, not counting a bunch of Prowlers and a half dozen Vipers....the kids see these cars come and go, but rarely ever drive them...the cars all have the keys in them all the time and are at their disposal to use anytime they wish....they just don't drive them except on a very rare occasion...my son will drive my wifes Vette a few times a year, but rarely drives anything except his own car(Jeep)...my daughters husband has his third Viper, but she has only driven it a couple times, and never drove one of them at all....they don't want foreign cars, they just really don't have any interest at all in the toys....a few years ago I gave each of them a 1970 Challenger T/A 340 SIX-PAK, hers was Panther Pink and his was Plum Crazy(both were show cars)....within a year they both had sold the cars, I finally got a chance and bought the purple one back...my son was happy to see it return, sat in it a time or two and drove it once, but it has had only 10-20 miles put on it in the last year since I purchased it....guess it is just a change in times....hate getting old but I am glad I lived in the Sixties.... there will never be another time like it, EVER....

Prowlerbabe...
would have to see pictures ....was in Clearwater a couple of years ago for a convention...stayed at some fancy place south of town...could see the ocean on both sides of the street....can't remember what it was called...BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO LIVE....drove a yellow '90 Vette INDY Festival car down there from Indiana...cruised all over the place, loved it there...just reminded me, I sold a couple of rare MOPARS to a disc jockey in Tampa, his name was/is Mason Dixon....ever hear of him....sold him a green 1969 Dodge Daytona, a red/red Challenger T/A, and a 440 6-BBL lime 1970 Cuda....think that was it...sorry, no more kids, wives or pets...too old and cranky here

Mason Dixon is still kickin'. He's doing the morning show on the oldies station. He's quite a character (with a lot of cool cars).
