Saw this article in the USA Today a while back and decided to save it. Thought you might get a kick out of it!! Nostalgia lovers Don and Susan Sanders know a thing or two about drive-in theaters. They recently co-authored Drive-In Movie Memories as a sequel to their coffee-table book The American Drive-In Movie Theatre. You can also visit their web site at http://www.americandrivein.com while awaiting their upcoming movie, Drive-In Movie Memories. The couple traveled 40 states over the past 10 years to document this American cultural icon, discovering in the process that everyone has a drive-in story. Here are 10 great places to cuddle at the drive-in!! BRAZOS DRIVE-IN, Granbury, TX One screen location opened in 1954. It's just like it was when built. It has a small-town feel with great cheeseburgers. There's outdoor seating, too! Bounce with your friends on vintage lawn chairs in front of the concession stand where speakers hang nearby so you can get out of your car and watch the movie in the open air! Phone: 817.573.1311 MOVIE MANOR MOTOR INN / STAR DRIVE-IN, Monte Vista, CO This classic has a playground and great food and there's an extra bonus: You can watch movies (through a large picture window) from your motel room which faces a giant outdoor screen and has sound piped in. It's in excellent condition. It's like perfect. An added bonus: cool Colorado nights. Phone: 800.771.9468 or 719.852.5921 RODEO DRIVE-IN, Port Orchard, WA They have three screens, a playground, swap meets and FM sound. Northern Washington gives you a good picture because there's very little ambient light. Phone: 360.698.6030 SILVERMOON DRIVE-IN, Lakeland, FL It's the only drive-in we know with homemade pizza and beer. Features the original neon sign. It's one of Florida's first drive-ins (built in 1948), but it's still in very good shape. There's a swap/flea market on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Phone: 863.682.0849 66 DRIVE-IN, Carthage, MO Completely restored (and reopened in 1998), it's located directly on Route 66. It has the original glass-block ticket booth, plus it's original neon sign. It's cool! Phone: 417.359.5959 HULL'S DRIVE-IN, Lexington, VA When the owner died, local townspeople founded Hull's Angels. Their efforts kept the drive-in open. It has its original grass field (from 1950), which slopes nicely to provide a great view of the screen. It's the country's only non-profit, community-owned drive-in. Phone: 540.463.2621 CAPRI DRIVE-IN, Coldwater, MI The original family runs the theater, which has great food and the original neon sign. Great FM sound system, too. This family (Tom and Sue Magocs) really knows what a drive-in experience should be. Cool nights! Phone: 517.278.5628 BECKY'S DRIVE-IN, Berlinsville, PA Possibly America's best drive-in experience. The same family has run the theater for 50 yers. They were showing movies here before there were drive-ins, setting up chairs behind a restaurant. Formerly known as the Route 45 Drive-In, this operatoion is one of the earliest drive-ins in America. It has never closed. Great family atmosphere, complete with pony rides! Phone: 510.767.2249 SKYLINE DRIVE-IN, Barstow, CA Re-opened in 1996 (after being dark for nine years), it features two screens and clear California nights. There's a clean, comfortable concession stand. The setup is pristine. Phone: 760.256.3333 49er DRIVE-IN, Valparaiso, IN There's a brand-new air-conditioned concession stand, which serves Orville Redenbacher popcorn, this city being the home of his popcorn. It was brought back from the dead 17 years ago. It's in great shape now. Phone: 219.462.6122 If any of you live near any of these drive-ins, they sound like a great place to have a Prowler cruise day!!! I'm sure a lot of us have some great stories to tell about drive-in experiences!!!! Like the time Bob sneaked some friends into the drive-in in the trunk of his car.............. |

The first movie I ever saw was at a drive-in. My parents took me and my brother and sister to The Sound of Music. Us kids got to go in our pajamas and it was about the coolest thing in my life (at that point). Years later I had my second drive-in experience. Her name was Sheila. Kevin ------------------ |

Well I`ve got to be middle age man here. So with that, this 31 year old man, all I remember about drive in`s is that there was always the best play grounds at the front of the drive in. The swings were the best, slides the highest, and everyone of the cars faced you!!!! ------------------ |

At 115 years old, I have been to many drive in's in my life. Can't say that I ever saw a movie but each and every session was well worth the price of admisssion! Gotta run as my new air cooled athletic supporter just came in and I want to see how it fits and, if it has the Alley Cat stamp of approval on it. Bought some special soft paper the other day for my number one can and it had the stamp on it. Seemed to work better but I could not understand why it had an electric cord and a plug on it. Ed invented the Drive-In movie concept, way back when. He said he only went of rainy nights, so the windows would fog up! Most of the girls made him sit in the back seat alone,,,,,,they got alittle embarrassed when they saw his pok-a-dot underware. This message has been edited by ALLEY CAT on 08-08-2002 at 08:59 PM |

When I was young there were no cars yet, hence no need for drive-ins. Actually when I was about 5 years old there was a drive in about 2 blocks away and you got in free if you walked in and we would go and play on the swings, etc. It was out in the country. Now that is the middle of the city with shopping centers lining both sides of the street. all that change in just 50 years or so. The drive in was new and then it was gone. |

As a child growing up we went to the drive-in movies regularly. I think I saw all of Sean Connery's "Bond" movies at the drive-in. I went one time at 16 years old before they started closing down the drive-ins around our area. That was the last time until this summer. We checked out a couple of drive-ins because we thought it would be fun to get a group of Prowlers together during the Chrysler Nationals at Carlisle. Saturday after the show at Carlisle we had six Prowlers go to Haar's Drive-In located in Dilsburg Pa. It was a blast. I had no idea they were still so popular. We had to get there at 7pm so that we could all park next to eachother. That place holds 500 cars and by 8:30 they were turning cars away. Needless to say we had two hours of constant attention before the movies started. When intermission came we decided to leave since we had to get up early the next day. Once we all fired up the cats and turned on the neons the crowd gathered again. It was great, except one of us forgot to turn their neons off after getting on the main road and got to meet one Pa's finest. All in all it was a great time. I highly recommend it. Oh Ed, when you were young was there fire yet? LOL ------------------ |

At 10 years old Mom & Dad took us to the drive in while on vacation. One of the shows was THE GRADUATE I didn't understand Mom keep putting her hands over my eyes during some of the scenes until my brother took me to see it later in the year Putting several guys in the truck of the `67 Lincoln, do you know how many will fit in the truck of one of those cars? I use to go to the drive in several times a week during the summer as a teenager. Too bad the drug & thug crowd took over and made it so the normal teenager & family man wouldn't go. I understand that they are rebounding in popularity. Visit your local Drive In this weekend ------------------ |

"Grew UP" practically in a drive-in. My mom had a job there when I was in Junior High, my brother was ticket-taker.... on occasion would go out and help him change the marquee (always a little nervous about that with all that 'electrical buzzing' going on around me)... and to THINK how much all those 'posters' we threw away every week would be worth.. in Sentimental Value alone! It was the old "Circle Drive-In Theater" in Beaumont, Texas, which had another, the "South Park". MANY of my 'older' childhood memories all centered around it, in one way or another. Rode in the 'trunk' more than once as a kid growing up (before I got in for free)! Always was a blast! Some of the ones I remember seeing, Shane, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, John Wayne & Beach BLanket movies out the yazoo! Wish they'd rebound on a larger scale. Nowadays though, with the 'radio' sound, it just doesnt seem as much fun as the old speakers.. yeah, they got ripped off their stands a lot, but what the heck ! Have many times mentioned to the missus that I would like to 'someday', perhaps in our retirement, find one abandoned and reopen, or start fresh and open one. Probably oughta find a warmer climate to do that in though. Up here would be about a 20-30 week season max. Thanks for the site referral CJ This message has been edited by GenoTex on 08-09-2002 at 02:21 AM |

2 distinct memories pop up when I think of the old drive in movies: (1) as kids we would fill pillow cases with popcorn to save a buck and save a trip. Pretty disgusting sleeping on that pillow case when we got home. (2) how embarrassing to get caught with 1 foot out of the trunk just when the lights came on for intermission. Fortunately it was a XXX drive in and most had other things on their mind. |

An update. In today's paper they had a two page article about the 4 local Drive-ins that are still in business. We ought to have Prowler night at the local Drive-in sometime. |

Only one is actually in Cincinnati proper. One is just a little east of town and one is in Indiana about 45 minutes away and the other one is just north about 15 minutes from Richard's house. They are all within a 45 minute drive, I think. |
