Read in the Classified forum about yellow paint being a $1000 upcharge in 1999. That doesn't make sense to me. Mercedes does the same thing, they charge $600 extra for metallic silver and black.

Seems like BS to me. So if you don't want to pay the upcharge what would you get? A car in primer coat? What's next? Oh, you wanted tires *ON* your car sir?

The upcharge was for new colors other than the original purple. Yellow was first. I guess DC figured they had to make people think yellow was special so they charged extra for it.

Later they charged $1000 for chrome upgrade on wheels also.

With the original 5 - 10k+ on the car, these probably didn't really matter.

Chrysler did the same thing on the PT Cruiser, at least in the first year - "inferno red" was an extra $200.

I told my wife to go for it, but now she complains that "cranberry red" is really purple.

Go figure.

The yellow was so difficult for them to paint, (from the guys at MSX) they had more time in it to get them to cover, even if Tom Mills doesn't think it has enough paint on them....lol....I really do not understand why there is so many Yellows. In april of `99 they said they would not paint any more yellow cars, go figure, 1,000 more after that. This is the reason they gave for the extra charge. If you buy paint the color can change the cost of the product. Not sure what the paint cost but who knows it might have been more than the purple.

No you could not get a car in gray primer. The primer on our cars is colored befor spraying and comes out the same color as the car. I guess when I bought my car in July of `98 for $41,000 and most were selling for 50~70 K an extra 1,000 for yellow was no big deal to me. If you didn't want to pay the grand you sure as H*** wouldn't pay the MARKET VALUE ADJUSTMENT

Actually, at one point early in planning stages, they considered offering the Prowler in primer so that you could paint it whatever color you wanted. They decided against it.

I was there with larry and was told the same thing about yellow ("oh, we won't be making any more, it is just too darn hard to paint" -- ranks up there with "read my lips, no more taxes" and "I did NOT have sex with that girl".) Oh well ... still one of the most striking colors done.

CJ, would have been interesting if they HAD done that ... but opens up a can of worms if the painter has problems with paint sticking in spots ... too many warranty claims to deal with then.

FYI--- From what I understand from a friend who bought a porsche boxster, tires/wheels RE AN OPTION!! not just an upgrade in size, but any tire /wheel/rim is an option and not included in the base price. Also, you cant buy it without some sort of wheels...go figure

I would like to see a list of the number of registered owners grouped by Prowler color. As far as I know the only two options ever available on the Prowler where the Yellow color and chrome wheel upcharges on the 99's. Maybe we should start a Prowler trivia section. Did you know?

Rich, Red was also listed as an upgrade or option. $ 1000 for that and $1000 for chrome wheels, 42,000 total for a 99 red.
I am fairly sure you can sort the list by color.

Ed are you sure about the wheels. I have never ever seen or heard of a Red Cat with silver wheels. DC may have uped the price to compensate for the chrome wheels but I don't believe they were an actual option. I could be wrong.

Have a 99 Red Cat with polished chrome wheels, both color and wheels options. Sticker was 45,500ish (don't have it with me).

Who's the official Prowler historian?

According to "Prowler Story", red was introduced after chrome wheels were standard (logic would conclude that all reds, therefore, came with chrome wheels). Specifically, it states that chrome wheels became standard in September 98 (on 99 model year) and red didn't come out until February 99 (as a 2000 model). THIS MUST BE CLARIFIED!
http://www.prowleronline.com/story.php

January 1998: The 1999 model year Prowler debuts at the Los Angeles Auto Show . . . . 99 model year production begins in January with Purple with Silver wheels.

March 1998 : A new gleaming old Hot Rod color (Yellow) was the 2nd color added to the Prowler pallet and production begins of the Yellow Prowler with Silver wheels.

May 1998: A small production run of Purple are built during the Yellow run.

July 1998: Another production run of Purple begins in July.

September 1998: Chrome wheels are introduced into production. 308 Purple Prowlers are built with Chrome wheels (253 for US and 55 for Canada). Chrome wheels will now be standard on all future Prowlers. In addition, a chrome wheel option is now available for the Prowler trailer.

October 1998: Prowler Black is 3rd color added to Prowler pallet and Black production begins. Black is the first color produced with all wheels being Chrome.

1999: Colors are the main story as Prowler roars forward to the year 2000 ...

February 1999: The fourth Prowler color (Prowler Red) is introduced into production and chrome wheels are standard. During February, 19 Yellow Prowlers are built with Chrome wheels and another five Purple Prowlers are built with Chrome wheels.

Only 19 Yellow 1999s were produced with chrome wheels.

I was told this was because the inventory of silver wheels was depleted and that all future Prowlers would have chrome wheels.

I've never seen a red with silver wheels either Rich.

The term option only applied to the Window Sticker Decal... Eventually, things listed as options in 99 became part of Base Price (like the chrome wheels & colors). On the 2002 models the only option listed on window sticker is the Destination Charge.

The Prowler Story is being updated & here are some changes to the section Grrowl referenced...

"September 1998

Chrome wheels are introduced into production. 308 Purple Prowlers are built with Chrome wheels (253 for US and 55 for Canada). Chrome wheels will now be standard on all future Prowlers. In addition, a chrome wheel option is now available for the Prowler trailer.

October 1998

Prowler Black is 3rd color added to Prowler pallet and Black production begins. Black is the second color produced with all wheels being Chrome.

December 1998

A black Howler version of the Prowler built at Metal Crafters in California with a 4.7L V8, manual transmission and pickup box rear end.

1999

Colors are the main story as Prowler roars forward to the Year 2000 …

February 1999

The fourth Prowler color (Prowler Red) is introduced into production and chrome wheels are standard. During February, 19 Yellow Prowlers are built with Chrome wheels and another five Purple Prowlers are built with Chrome wheels."

Thanks, Laddie.

But how do we explain the 99 red, regardless of wheels?

Grrowl. I guess I don't understand your question...

After Sept. 1998 Chrome wheels became standard from a Production standpoint. All Prowlers had Chrome wheels after Sept. 98. I guess it just took the "Window Sticker Police" awhile to catch up...

There were both 1999 & 2000 model year Red Prowlers produced... No Red Prowlers had Silver wheels...

Laddie,

Maybe I'm mis-reading the words in the History:

"1999: Colors are the main story as Prowler roars forward to the Year 2000. . . ."

HERE'S MY CONFUSION - ISN'T THE NEXT ENTRY A 2000 MODEL YEAR? (or, when did the 2000 model year begin? It seems to be February 99 from the way I'm reading this).

"February 1999: The fourth Prowler color (Prowler Red) is introduced into production. . . ."

Confused (-GRROWL)

I believe the 1,000 charge for chrome wheels even though the silver was not available was to up the base price on the `99's

I was not saying that the chrome wheels were an option for the red, I am saying that there is a charge of $ 1000 listed right on the window sticker. I hope that clears that part of it up. My car was produced in March of 1999 and I got it the first part of April.

OK Grrowl.

I think I understand. The 1999 you reference is Calendar Year 99... The 2000 Prowler model year Production started in August 1999...

This is also in the next updated Prowler Story...
