Sandy just called from Tabernash, Colo and said that the fire fighting airplane that went down today, crashed about 6 miles south of Estes Park, about 200 yards off of the highway. That was on RT 36, which was the route most of you used to return to Denver, while CJ led us back on the Peak to Peak highway. She said they are starting to evacuate Estes Park. What a shame!

I just got off the phone with our friends who own the Village Goldsmith in Estes Park. Karen said they have determined that the fire was an accident caused by a catalytic converter on a Jeep that got too hot and set brush on fire. The owners of the Jeep tried to put the fire out and notified authorities immediately, but because of the terrible drought situation, it went fast. The plane crashed around the Big Elk Meadows subdivision off of Highway 36. They closed 36 and the NTSB would not allow anymore planes in the area for 48 hours. That didn't help the firefighters. The town of Estes Park was not evacuated, just put on alert. She said the closest it got was about 4 miles. They did use the Estes Park High School as a shelter for those people in the fire areas that were evacuated. It burned about 4100 acres. They did have rain over the weekend and that helped contain the fire.Karen said to thank everyone for their concern!
