We went downtown to watch the fireworks tonight and a guy came driving down the public landing and drove his amphibicar right into the river. The fireworks are shot off of a barge.
That got me to thinking. His car is probably 45 years old and it is still watertight enough to drive in the river. I wonder if my prowler will ever not leak in the rain. I guess technology hasn't moved us too far ahead in that area.

This is interesting that you got to see an amphicar. My girlfriends former husband owns one and drives it at Geist reservoir at Indy all of the time. It steers like a innertube and goes pretty slow, but gets the looks. He restored it around I think 10 years ago and has been on numerous shows because of its looks and how it runs. This car is like brand new.

I can find out more about it if I just ask her, but I never pay much attention to it since we see it so much and since it use to be in my garage until he moved it to his new location a few years ago.

There are not many of the around.

You can do the same thing with an old VW they use to say in their commercials years ago. The ad showed a VW in water and said that the VW would float definitely, but indefinetly.

I hadn't seen one in years. It looked like it could get swamped pretty easily but they stop all river traffic during the fireworks display. It looked to be in excellent shape from our vantage point but did move pretty slowly.

Friend is holding his 1st annual car show near Kenosha, WI tomorrow on some land that he dug a man-made lake on for his 2 amphicars to run around and in. They are both restored, however one does leak a bit. They are very cool and very unique (like the Prowler). Once saw on for sale at a car show in Indy, but it needed work and didn't have the time, space or patience at the time. He also has the only Hupmobile convertible in existance ... quite the collection ... i think I may be the only Prowler at his event ... we'll see! But he an authority on Amphicars!

Geno ...

Thanks for the offer ... but I looked on his flyer and it is for ILNCRS, WNCRS and WCC members (National Corvette Restorer Society and a local Corvette club) primarily and then "by invitation only". BUT ... keep the Beloit Autorama in mind in September ... will have a refresher post on that in August!!!

NO Problem... Ray, keep me in mind when Beloit rolls around, just three skips and four hops Maybe we can get Paul from Cedarburg, and others in the area to join us ???? See quite a few Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan prowlers, we just need to 'get organized' !

The amphicar has always been intreaguing to me. The last restored cars I've priced have been in the $25,000 range. I did watch a fellow sink his VW in a lake once. Probably a comercial folks at home should not try.

growing up there was a guy that was service manager for speedway VW that lived close to me and they took a bug to the river to see how long it would float. This test vehicle floated for 11 minutes. They use to have a raft race back in the `70's promoted by local radio station, (same guy's son) took VW body and mounted to a raft and floated it down the river. Made the newspaper

I have seen a few anfib cars, looks odd at night to see 2 headlights coming across the water. i was sitting on our dock at the lake and this guy came up to the boat ramp and pulled out.

I had a hard time keeping the water out of my 18' sidewinder jet boat and it didn't have doors.

My Prowler has been leak free in some pretty strong downpours.

UPDATE: On Wednesday one of the local stations did a 3 or 4 minute piece on that very car. It turns out the guy is the Pres. of the International Amfibicar club. He has one of 600 remaining of 4000 made or one of 400 remaining of 6000 made. I can't remember (Hey it was over 24 hours ago, give me a break) Anyway they showed him going about 25 MPH right into the river. They didn't ask him if his top leaks. That was what I wanted to know. He lives in norther KY.

Back in 1970, the dealership I worked for traded for one of them jewels . Red, with white top and white interior. We detailed it out and put on lot for $2495 (we had $1200 in it). We tried everything to sell it, no offers. We had a lake one mile away and even offered to demo it,,,,,no takers. Finally, three years later some guy walks in and offered $900 for it-------GONE. I even asked him if he had a brother, lol.
Ed, thanks for the MEMORIES
