I'm not sure it qualifies as a "living" these days, but I run a startup web-based tech journal aimed at Apple Macintosh pros. This after 20 years or so in various paid capacities in the computer industry (management, programming, writing, consumer online services, etc). When I got hit by layoffs late last year, I decided to do my own thing for a while. Best of luck getting out of the cooler. My personal advice would be to either take advantage of your education (if you already have it) or get down and get funky with the books right away. Whatever your field of choice, it can't hurt to learn more about it. -brad This message has been edited by bbrighton on 05-19-2002 at 02:15 PM

Well Boyz.....This is probably an important subject to help to inspire you youngins so I thought that it might be wise to answer. Since, I am currently 115 years old, I have held many important jobs in my lifetime. My resume would probably be too long to post so I thought that a brief synopsis might be in order. 1902 - 1916 Pickle Slicer- Clauson Pickles $.09 per hour. 1916 - 1920 Tank Commander - US Army $.039 per hour 1921 - 1929 Cloth Cutter - Maiden Form Bras $.061 per hour 1930 - 1936 Gangster - Chicago Mob $.035 per hour 1937 - 1941 Hit man - Chicago Mob - $128 per hit 1942 - 1945 General - US Army - $4.50 per hour 1946 - 1952 VP - General Motors - $9.50 per hour 1953 - 1962 Surgeon - Johns Hopkins - $13.50 per hour 1963 - 1967 Astronaut - NASA - $9.45 per hour 1968 - 1971 Advisor - Viet Nam - $11.25 per hour 1972 - 1977 Spy (James Bond 007)- CIA - $15.45 1978 - 1984 747 Pilot- American Airlines - $28.45 per hour 1985 - 1991 Inventor - IBM PC Computer - $31.25 per hour 1992 - 2002 Movie Star (Porn) - Hollywood - $120 per movie This career is quite varied but did offer me a fair amount of opportunities. At the present time, I do not need any assistants so I would suspect that you would be better served to solicit others on the board if you are looking for future employment. If I could be so bold as to offer a suggestion I would tell you to follow you imagination. Unfortunately, I have a limited imagination and that has been what has kept me from earning the really big bucks and having a really good vocation for all of these years. Wild Bill,The imagination, connotation and denotation all play a part in creating an image that is indelible in all of our minds. I can assure you that Viagra and other accessories are not prerequisites for my latest vocation. I think that my Prowler and, my well known desire to be an accomplished writer like Mr. Cat (Alley), help to keep me young and vital. Most of the young fresh things all think that I am in my mid life range and who am I to tell them that if that is true, I'll live to 230! My buddy Jack was pulling locomotives with his teeth at 80! Who do you think was his inspiration? Everyone has to have a hero. I gotta run as I just got a pair of turbo charged US Keds and I'm going for my nightly jog around the neighborhood. I always try a half marathon at least once a week just to stay in shape. At present I am a regulatory engineer in the fuel cell/alternative energy industry.I just split from 6 years in the DSL/internet access hardware engineering biz when telecom went kerplunk... Before that I was a sailor in Uncle Sam's navy, and before that I was a licensed pawn broker in Texas...and before that I was a grocery sacker at albertsons, and before that I was a paper boy, and before that I mowed lawns for $5 and before that... I suppose my point is that people can do alot of different things if they put their mind to it. I don't have an engineering degree but it has not slowed me down much in the engineering arena. rather than think outside the box about what you can do, stay in the box and poke around in the corners where nobody thinks to look...JMO ------------------

Retired aerospace engineer, last 14 years spent doing training on how to design products so they are easy to manufacture and assemble, thereby reducing cost very significantly - Goal is to reduce product cost by 50% (Did you know that GM's Northstar engine has 550 less parts than the Lexus engine, both are 4.7 liter V8 engines with dual overhead cams, and 4 valves per cylinder), Still do consulting work occasionally, nationally and internationally, on all kinds of products. Life's work has been fun, and it still is. How much do I make? As my Dad told me over and over - "Son, it's not how much you make that is important or a measure of your success, it's how much you spend, and how you treat people. The key to having money is spending less; not many people are willing to do that" The following is from my autobiography that I had published. We really have it good in our country. And we take so much for granted. The 'Royalty People' such as kings, queens, princes, princesses, lords, dukes, czars, and all kinds of other rulers of olden years didn't have it as comfortable and convenient as the 'Common Person' in the USA has it today. We can drive/fly to almost anywhere in the world quickly, with creature comforts such as heating, air conditioning, music, lumbar support, and GPS navigational aids. We have free time to enjoy entertainment and hobbies of almost unlimited varieties. And all of this is affordable by most people. In our residences we have concrete driveways outside, carpeting inside and sometimes outside, temperature and humidity and pollen control, dish washers, clothes washers and dryers, color television, cable television, big screen television, VCRs and VCR recorders, and computer systems. We have line phones and cellular phones, answering machines, all kinds of music equipment ranging from the kind you listen to, and to the kind you play yourself, all kinds of cooking equipment, all kinds of food, all kinds of games, all kinds of clothing. The list is unlimited. But I always wonder does all this 'stuff' make people happier, I don't think it does. Happiness comes from the heart; it doesn't come from how much 'stuff' you have. And you can't take it with you when you die. I've never seen a hearse towing a You-Haul trailer behind it yet!

H/Wood - I'm a med school drop out, but that didn't stop me. Traveled to Brazil and got my degree in facial reconstruction surgery and now do plastic surgery for the rich and famous in Scottsdale, Az. My income is in the seven digit area, but due to my pending IRS conflicts, I can say no more.Maybe you have heard of some of my clients: Cher, Diana Ross, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Val Kilmer, Ed Monahan, John Koonce, Mel Gibson, Geo Clooney, Marty Usher, Brittany Spears, Pamela Anderson,,,,,,just to name afew. Next week, I have Scot Sterns scheduled for tuesday, but this might be my greatest challenge to date. Not doing his face this time, as he wants new forskin to rebuild his image in the movie business. I've only refused to do two people ever,,,,,one Keith BigMac Mc in Canada and GaryC in So-Cal. After viewing their personal photos for many hours, even I decided I couldn't do miracles! Got to run,,,,time to stack those 1 lb boxes on pallets in that cold cooler.

Mr. Cat,You make me laugh! You are sooooo weird. Several issues: I know of your expertise in your particular field and I have seen your latest work. You are good but you really should consider glasses, at your age, as some of your recent victims have turned out unusual. I think that anyone who sees your work would tend to agree that you need a checkup. As to the idea of adding to my physic, I need to remind you that I already purchased your original enhancement products and as it "stands" now, I can hardly "keep up" with the current demand. All of the young fresh things are lined up wanting to see my sense of humor since you provided me the miracle drugs. Lastly, I see that you too have now adopted the format of "having to run" and that is more than commendable. That clearly shows your class and there is now no doubt that you are the leader of the pack. I gotta run as I promised Gary that I would go to the junk yard and see if the mouse family in the back of the car is still with us or was killed in the wreck. I am also handling the law suit from the victim that Gary hit while sitting at the traffic light. I intend to take all of his money and then his fantastic house on the hill. Scot

My "Primary" occupation since I was 19 years old, has been 'railroading'... while attending Business College in Beaumont, Texas, Santa Fe Railroad became my first employer, hiring out there as a stenographer/clerk. Various promotions lead to "Secretary to Superintendent", fancy title with no pay... and then I decided to switch gears to the 'money' area and saw the opportunity to become a Locomotive Engineer (blow the whistle, ring the bell) which I took in 1976. Did that for Santa Fe until laid off about 10-11 years later, then worked various positions (Scientific Research & Development firm in Waco, bookkeeper (falling back on the "education") and found that I missed railroading too much to let it fade away. A new railroad started up in Wisconsin, got in early as an engineer, and in January 94 got promoted to "Road Foreman of Engines" supervising 96 engineers with a territory covering just under 500 miles. As the old SNL character used to say....to paraphrase "Railroading has been very very good to me" It has provided a comfortable life for myself and family, with children all grown, grandchildren running around all over the place, etc. Not a life for everyone, as Ed can attest to, long hours, irregular lifestyle, once you get in the groove, it aint so bad Fascinating career.... fascinating life ...
