The gumball 3000 came to Nashville last week and it was a treat for everyone, except me. The reason being is that I didn't see a Prowler. t was cool seeing the Viper's, Porshe, Lamborghini, Bently, etc..... It was kind of disppointing that I didn't see a Prowler. Why is that????

Prowlerhopeful.........Well, that's one I'd never heard of!! So, I checked it out on the internet. It appears that this race evolved in Europe. Sounds like it was mostly made up of the rich and famous driving very exotic cars!! Having conquered Europe, it has hit American soil. It is very similar to Hot Rod Power Tour. Had anyone on this board known about it, they most likely would have posted info on tour. I wonder how they went about advertising it, so that Americans would know? My guess is the reason you didn't see any Prowlers was because no one knew about it! ------------------ CJ - The One and Only 1999 Black 2002 Deep Candy Red Mopar Prowler (Borla) Exhaust System on both cats Splash Guards on both cats Matching Black Prowler Trailer Black Cat Plate - PPROWLR Candy Red Plate - CJPROWLN Classic/Beautiful - I'm referring to the Cat of course!

Is this the event that inspired the movie The Gumball Ralley with Burt Reynolds, etc ... ? The two hot chicks in the black Countach? Very cool movie, but had no idea it actually took place. I know that Car & Driver sponsor a One Lap of America run that has speed invloved, but wasn't considered a Gumball race.

Yes this was inspired by the movie. Here's what it says on their website (www.gumball3000.com)Inspired by the liberating and infamous 'Gumball Rally' and 'Cannonball Run' films, the first 'Gumball 3000' rally (3000 because that's how many miles it is) was organised in 1999 to evoke those memories, and bring together the worlds of film, fashion, music and business for a 'fun' motoring experience. That first 'Gumball 3000' rally was a great success, capturing the attention of the world's media. With an amazing 3000 mile route across Europe, staying in the finest Chateau's, partying in Monaco's Casino Square, with participants from all over the world. Rock 'n' roll stars raced Supermodels, sports stars, racing drivers and adventurers alike, driving everything from Ferrari's, Porsche's and McLaren F1's, to old classics and even little old 'Herbie', in the greatest adventure possible. Now that you guys know about it, would you guys consider entering something like this?

The gumball rally movie came out before the Cannonball run and I think was a little better. JMO I saw a show on the speed channel about 6 months ago that was all about the Cannonball Run. It was so named because the crazy mind behind it has the last name Cannonball. He now works as an editor of on of the car mags. (Road & Track, Car and Driver, I can't remember which.) He was on interviewed and talked about it. They ran the race twice back in the Mid-70's It was only planed to be run once but after getting to California the guy who won bragged that he could win the next time it was run also. So....one driver said lets go tomorrow. Then they raced back. Cannonball went on to talk about how dangerous it would be to do it today. When they ran it there were far fewer cars on the road. Police could not cross county or state lines and were not nearly as organized. The show went on to talk about a run that was made in MD in the mid-90's from Washington DC to Ocean City MD. Not all that far but over 100 cars showed up at midnight to make the illegal run. Most were arrested by the time they made the bay bridge and those that showed up in OC at the finish line got arrested. They talked about the runs in Europe but the special wasn't really about those rallys. It was a great show (1 hour long) and I recommend it to anybody to watch if it comes back on. Voodoo

If I remember correctly, one of the motivations behind the original rally in the 70's was to protest the lowering of speed limits (the gas crunch), among other things.------------------
