On January 2nd of this year, we had to put our beloved 12 year old female German Shepard to sleep due to paralysis resulting from multiple ruptured discs. We spent three sad months trying to heal our broken hearts vowing to not go through this again when our God daughter dragged us to the SPCA to show us a beautiful one and a half year-old male German Shepard which had been brought in by an Animal Control Officer. He stole our hearts and we adopted him on the spot a little over a week ago. What an incredible animal this was...clean, handsome, obviously well-trained and oh so loving. Two days after we got him home, he started to have diarrhea and began to vomit up his food. He basically hasn't eaten anything for a week and what he did eat, he vomited up. The vet tried two different medicines which have not worked so we took him in this morning for a complete workup. We got a call today saying that there is cause for concern as his food is not passing through his system. They are concerned about a blockage and have done X-rays and blood tests but have not determined the cause as of this evening. Hopefully we will know something by tomorrow but for this evening, the house is very lonely and empty again. It is so amazing how quickly these furry little creatures can burrow into your hearts and minds and endear themselves to you and make them an indispensible part of your life. We will do whatever it takes to save this precious dog and make him well again...if that is in our power and the power of our wonderful Veterinarian (who happens to be a Prowler owner too!). If you are an animal lover and understand what we are trying to say here, a little prayer to your own supreme being on our "buddy's" behalf would be much appreciated at this difficult time. Thanks for taking the time to care enough to read this post. If there is any justice in this world, perhaps we will be able to post "good" news next time. With a lump in our throats... Kay and Mike |

I know exactly your position and feelings. Your story actually got me. My wife and I have a 4 year old German Shorthair Pointer "Blue" that we love and would go to all ends to help him if he were sick. For us, not having any kids, the furry 4 legged animal becomes "Your kid". Wishing the best for a speedy recovery of your German Shepard, get well pupster! Alex ------------------ |

Kay and Mike - I feel your pain. I lost my dog Henry on Jan. 12th of this year. I'm still heartbroken and miss him terribly. Amazing the unconditional love our pets give us,,,,you are in my prayers. |

I can understand how you feel, Kelly and I have a Rottwieler named Samson, he's 12 years old has many problems but appears to be in no pain. Its certain that we will probably have to put him to sleep some day in the near future. Same with us no children 3 pets. My heart go's out to you. Gary ------------------ |

Your post reminded me of my two Irish setters that passed away in 1988, we still haven't recovered from from that horrible year. It's been 21/2 year's that we have our beautiful springer spaniel (LILY). She has captured our emotions our hearts and brought back that feeling we had when we had our two SETTER'S. Animals are KIND, GENTILE,SWEET, PROTECTIVE, LOVING,and GIVE unlimited PLEASURE and make you feel ALIVE. We Understand how you feel. ANDREW&JANET |

Kay & Mike, Hope it all turns out ok for your Shepard. We have 3 Labs and 1 mutt and we lost our 8 year old Great Dane last fall. He was the 3rd Dane we have had. I work at home so I really get attached to them all. The loss is very very hard to take, But it's well worth it. We will never be with out a Dog/kid. Take care.Good luck ! ------------------ |

Kay and Mike...... I am so sorry to read about your beloved pets. I know exactly how you feel. I'm sure there are many of us that do. When we lived in Colorado many years ago, I was finally able to get the dog I'd always wanted. We never had one before her and I've never had one after her. She was a beautiful splash St. Bernard named Brandy. She was 140 lbs. of love and companionship for our whole family. She was my dog and I loved her dearly. She was the sweetest, gentlest thing I'd ever known. She was a protector and babysitter to my too very young sons. They adored her and she tolerated them beyond belief!!! Everyone loved her. When she was 6 years old, I had to put her down as she was diagnosed with bone cancer in her right front leg. It was one of the hardest things I'd ever done, but I could not stand seeing her in pain. She'd given us so much unconditional love, and I loved her enough to do what was best for her. I was devastated after losing her and I could never get another dog. I've also lost a fair number of cats over the years. About 5 years ago, I lost my favorite cat, Samson and for several years could not bring myself to get another. Two years ago, I fell in love with two Singapuras which I named Julius and Caesar (they are brothers) and I don't know what I would do without them now. I've also had eight ferrets. In the last 2 years, I've lost 6 of them. I'm down to one......Toby and he's not doing very well. Our pets give us such unconditional love and companionship, they are part of the family and losing them is always traumatic......for me, anyway. I will say a prayer for your pet and hope for the best. Remember, though, that if you lose him, he will be on the Rainbow Bridge with your other Shepard......waiting for you! |

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful and kind thoughts...also to everyone else who may have read this thread and didn't post but said a silent prayer! Buddy has had exploratory surgery and is back at home and seems quite good but the Vet still isn't sure what is the matter yet. He fears it is Auto-Immune disease which is where the body's immune system is tricked into thinking that another part of the body is an invader and it attacks itself. He is now on steroids and an expensive anti-allergy dog food while this is all sorted out. We are hoping for the best and again thanks so much to all for your thoughtful comments comforting words! Sincerely, Mike |
