Okay - I am in the market to get a digital camera (so I don't have to take all the pictures of my kat to be developed).

On the high end I have been looking at the Sony Cybershot F707 and on the low end the Olympus C700. I have seen Dan's pictures from his Olympus and they are fantastic! I want something that has really good low light capabilities also.

Opinions please!

I bought a Cyber shot not quite a year ago, it's 3.3 megapixel, 6x zoom. Came with an 8meg memory stick. I bougth 2 64's for it, plus an extra battery. I like it because it's so small. Not sure about low light. It has a built in flash that is either auto or manual so as long as I remember to turn it on (for questionable lighting) it seems to work OK.

I have the Sony cybershot 3.3 also. It's a great camera and can even take video and emailing with it is a snap. Sometimes I think it has too many whistles and bells though.

I have an older Sony Mavica 1.3 mega pixels. I keep thinking about upgrading but my pictures come out so good when I print them on Glossy Photo Paper in my Epson Stylus 740 printer, that I cannot justify it right now.

Dan - your too funny - I mean low pixel range. Yours is 2.1 Mp and the Sony is almost a 5 Mp. Believe me, I wasn't talking about the quality of pictures. Apparently you missed the part where I said I liked the FANTASTIC pictures your camera takes!

That is why I can't decide. What if I want to print a nice 8x10? The 2.1 Mp range is only good for about a 5x7.

Dan - you know how long I have been throwing this around!

Cliff,

How often you going to print pics larger than 5X7's ???

If you're going to invest on a full $20 picture printing equipment then maybe I can see you spending the $3000-$8000 dollars on a 5 or 8 mega pixel digi cam. There is so much science in taking great pics with a digi cam. You going to spend time learning all that?? The way I see you spend time with your family... I think NOT!!! You will waste you money..

Beyond this, you got spare change and you do not know what to do with it. Your mind is just consumed with the fact that you got to spend this money.

I might be wrong, maybe your going pro and will be selling posters and creating your own private photo business and want to print full sizer 10X12 layouts or larger.

If not,,,, then a 2 mega pixel is plenty for you and you can send me the extra cash I saved you. I think that will be about $2000 grand. I can use that right now...

You sure as heck can't post a 5 megapixel digi pic on this board. Mike Krehel plus all dialup personal will fire you.

But I think I understand,,, It is a guy thing... How large or how big is yours RIGHT???

Later...

I wouldn't and couldn't spend that much money. The F707 is between 700-800, about twice the price of the C700. At most I would be saving abot 400.

That is a lot of money for an extra 2 Mp or so - that is why it is so hard to decide.

You are right, I won't be doing that many 8x10s but I will be doing a few. Besides, you can always bring a picture down but you can't take it up.

I have seen many people using the cameras in the 3Mp range with great results and they are happy. Maybe I need to widen my choices on what I am looking at.

I guess it is back to dpreview.com for me

Then when you have decided on which one you want check out this site for price comparisions:

I used these sites to make my decision last year. Bought a Canon Powershot G1, it has everything that I wanted and much more. Compact, 3.4 Megapixels, low light, macro, movie capability (not great but does do video and sound), auto everything and it takes great still pictures despite the person behind the camera. . .

Cliff, I am ecstatic about the Canon G2 I bought 3 months ago. I needed it badly for work projects and it turns out to be one of the more fun tools I've ever owned. Here's a summary of what I love about it...
1. 4 resolutions, 3 grades of compression
2. You have to be awfully picky to see the difference between this camera's 2nd res 1024 x 768 setting and the highest at 2272 x 1704 but it's there if you need it.
3. Movable, swivel LCD IS CRITICALLY GREAT! You won't appreciate it until you begin using the camera a lot.
4. The swivel LCD also serves to protect the LCD when not in use as it folds into the body with the LCD facing inward!
5. One great gimmick is the 3 times zoom that works on any image taken. Say you're at a football game. You take a shot of the players so far away. Now just zoom in once or twice. It's like moving from the 100th row up to the 10th row while maintaining excellent clarity.
6. Movie mode with sound. My in-laws went nuts when they saw this gem showing off their grandkids in this small package.
7. Professional hot shoe...not all digitals have a regulation hot shoe for a bigger flash. I have a Canon flash that comes in very handy for those 15-50 foot range shots the built-in flash can't handle.
8 The software that comes with this camera is bar none, one the friendliest but still adequately sophisticated packages I've ever seen in a consumer product. It's not Photoshop but for all but 10% of the shots I take, more than this software package does, I don't need.

Can you tell I love this camera? 2 thumbs up, Canon G2.

Paul - thanks for mentioning the G2. That camera was also on my list. I ended up buying the G2.

Here are some of the first pics from the camera. One of the boy's baseball games.

Geno, I've got the yellow you need now. The yellow vinyl we've got is within a notch of perfect for the yellow.
