I have never had anything powder coated but I am looking into having a luggage rack powder coated. Can anyone tell me what an approximate cost should be? What did you pay to get the hitch or trailer tongued powder coated? I realize the size of the item painted affects the cost. I just want ball park figures. What is the advantage of powder coating vs. regular painting? Thanks. ------------------ |

ED, find a local place that does it and get a quote. It is well worth the expense. ------------------ |

Larry, I am going to get a local to look at it Sat. I want to know what to expect. This is a small operation and he only does it part time. He told me the powder alone would cost $ 75 unless it was a special order and then the powder would be $ 125. What is the advantage to powder coating? ------------------ |

Powder coating is way better than painting those parts ED most of the bike frames nowadays are powder coated you see how they stand up. powder is very cheap in most cases my brother does powder coating and he said to do a whole frame on lets say a 65 Impala would cost around 250.00 Canuck bucks,if it's prepped before hand so those little bits shouldn't be to much I will be seeing him tommorow he's picking me up at the paint shop Kats going in for a total strip and repaint so will ask him what he thinks and then I'll send you a PM PK |

Just had my hitch done, It ran me 25.00 plus tax. Ato also got a quote to have all the cross braces and the large plate above the radiator for about 40.00. He didn't have a exact match so we picked a color that was close, So that might have been a reason for the good prices, Didn't have to order any special colors. ------------------ |

Thanks, that gives me some idea. If he tells me $ 200 I can figure he is pretty high priced. ------------------ |

Ed, I use to run a powder coating shop several years ago you should try to find a bigger shop instead of the small mom and pop shop. The reason? Larger shops will have the basic colors and even special order colors in stock where as a small shop may have to order a box if they don't have it in stock and that's where the added costs are for the powder itself. Some shops charge by the foot or just a piece price, some add a setup fee for a special color as well. Check with the shop to see when they are running the same color as you want to save a setup fee. What I mean by the setup fee is, if the color you wish is different than what they are currently spraying, they will need to clean out the powder guns and tanks and reload the color for you. Most shops charge a special setup fee for this. If they are running the same color and can avoid this color change, most shops will not charge you the setup fee if your schedule permits. Check around to see what works best for you. I don't know how many shops you have in your area. Here in So Cal I can find approx. 60 shops! It is very competitive here in So. Cal. That's why I got out of it. ------------------ |

Powder coating is the strongest most robust color application you can provide for metal. even sandblasting under a good application cant break through the color the shine is not as high gloss as say a clear coat paint job but nearly. Its a process of actually baking the the powder to the piece this is done in ovens I do think larger shops are better because most of the time the smaller shops dont have large enough bakers(ovens....Good luck!! ------------------ |

With powder coated pieces you can beat it with a hammer and not chip it. Try that with paint. Eastwood has a kit that let's you powder coat yourself. I have seen it work and if it is only small pieces they can be done in toaster oven or regular household electric oven. Once prepped it can be ready to handle in less than 30 min. ------------------ |
