I'd like to make myself an Avatar to add to my signature line, but have no idea how. I want to learn how so are there any good books, instructional programs, etc. that explain how this is done?

Buy a good photo editing program. There are many out there and I think the best (and one of the most expensive) is PhotoShop.

Get to know the program, get some pictures and start playing with them - resizing them, changing their opacity, layering them on top of each other. Get creative.

There are also books out there to help you learn the photo editing program you choose.
