There was an article in the paper a couple of weeks ago and that was the first I had heard of it. I guess the biggest advantage is that you can find any type of music as you drive across country. Do they have commercials or is it commercial free?

I've tried it and will post some pics of a basic install of a Sony DRN-XM01C $299.00 in a Prowler tomorrow.

If I would have to guess, 30% of the channels are commercial free for $10.00 a month.

Here's the best part... No antenna on the outside of the car!

Gary,

It's great. My buddy picked one up about 3 weeks ago or so and put it in his jeep. It works great. No tuning and for $10 a month he gets over 100 channels. About half of them are commercial free. Every type of music you could want and comedy, church, sports, news, weather. It has it all. I would get one for the Kat but I don't want to take out the stock unit. But I might put one in my truck. Are you getting one??????

Yep, put it in the Prowler in less than 10 minutes. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Truck driving friend of mine got one that uses an adapter and has cassette that pops into cassette player of your car. Can be used in more than one vehicle this way.

Do not know any details other than that right now.

I have used tracking satilite on motor home to listen to music and it worked good except overpasses caused it to quit working for split second as you went under it.

Here are the pictures of the Sony DRN-XM01C XM satellite radio in a Prowler:

Close up of the XM radio

I put the radio in the pocket on the side of the console

They recommend installing the antenna on the outside of the car, but I first tried it on the dash and it will wedge between the glass and the dash, but I found that it worked perfectly on the rear of the console even in my garage!

I decided to get the Pioneer because I intend to keep it in this vehicle permanently. It had a control box to mount out of sight somewhere and a small control panel (see pix) It can mount nicely on a flat piece of dash or can hang loose by a wire. For now I'm happy with it tucked in that storage hole. The sound is input into your stereo with a built in FM modulator. Sound is great, seems much cleaner than brodcast radio.

I know this is a very old post, but I was wondering if anyone else has satellite radio installed in their Prowler? If so, did you have it done professionally or did you install it yourself? Pictures would be great. We rented a Taurus in Las Vegas and it had a Sirius system in it that was awesome. Thanks.

Hi Gary,

I've had XM Satellite Radio since it came out in November 2001 and installed it in my previous vehicle. I've got the Sony XM "Plug and Play" unit which allows me to swap it between my daily driver and my Prowler. This way I only pay one subscription fee since I can only drive one car at a time!

My Installation:
I had the head unit installed in the small space under the dash and between the shifter. The installer used an FM modulator to go through the stock radio unit and "hard wired" an additional 12V outlet behind the dash to provide juice to the Sony 6V power supply. The magnet mounted antennae (which complicated things a bit) is mounted on the trunk (with a non-marring sticker...since the magnet didn't stick) just behind the center-mounted brake light. It's a pretty slick/clean installation!

I chose the Sony unit because I bought an additional car kit so I can use it in my Jeep and then pop it into my Prowler (depending on which one I'm driving... since I can only drive one car at a time!) and as a bonus, I bought the home kit which allows me to plug in XM on my home stereo. I figure if I'm paying $9.95 / month, I might as well enjoy it in both of my vehicles and at home!

I'll post a few pics here before too long for anyone who's interested (I've been waiting on some descent weather)... Also, have a look at www.xmradio.com for more info.

Since I travel quite a bit all over the country satellite radio made sense for me.

Go for it!

JR

JR, your installation looks very clean. Where is your FM modulator installed? Does the front of the dash where the radio and a/c controls are located just pop off? Where did you have yours installed?
