I bet almost all of us have a can of WD-40, but did you know why it's named that? The WD-40 Company (formerly the Rocket Chemical Company of San Diego) has issued an explanation: "WD-40 literally stands for Water Displacement, 40th attempt. That's the name straight out of the lab book used by the chemist who developed it back in 1953. The chemist, Norm Larsen, was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion - a task which is done by displacing water. Norm's persistence paid off when he perfected the formula on his 40th try." So, there ya go - more of my effort to keep everyone informed about the most important things in life! |

Rich, I guess a lot of names for commercial products would amaze most of us. Thanks for the tidbit. I wonder, did they name the cleaner 409 the same way. ------------------ |

Norm, Yes that is how that one also came to be. It was invented by two scientists in the mid-fifties. It took them 409 tries. They wern't as good or lucky I guess. I only remember this because I have heard both of these "little known facts" before and my mind is like a sponge for information I don't really need on a day to day basis. Stuff I need to remember I can't, but these things I do. Go figure!?! Voodoo |
