I am looking for an impact wrench and air compressor to make my life easier in working on the kat (mostly to remove and replace lug nuts, etc.).

I found a Campbell Hausfeld combo at Home Depot that would seem to do the trick and was wondering if anyone had opinions about this brand.

The wrench delivers up to 250 ft/lb at 700 impacts per minute (and revolutions) and is about $30. The compressor is has 4 hp and a 5 gal tank and delivers max 175 psi and can be used intermittently with an impact wrench. It is about $198.

Does this sound like a good combo?

Cliff......

Bob has the same impact wrench that you are speaking about but recommends against using any impact wrench on aluminum wheels. He uses a Craftsman compressor.

The best way is to reinstall them by hand and carefully torque them to the proper specifications. You can use an impact wrench to remove the lug nuts, but without a protective insert in the socket you are liable to damage the lug nuts. Over-tightening the lug nuts can cause damage to the wheel, stretch the lug and even warp the brake rotor.

If you are not interested in having a compressor to run a variety of tools, a friend of mine has an electric impact wrench from Craftsman that would be good to take off lug nuts. I would not put them back on with it.

We used the electric impact wrench to tighten the axle nuts on my dune buggy (230 ft/lbs) and it handled it okay...pretty good value for the money...less than $100 I think.

Cliff, Campbell Hausfeld is a local company and seems to enjoy a pretty good reputation. For whatever that is worth to you.

Thanks for the reply folks I took the cheap way out. I jacked up the car and put it on jack stands and then turned the wheels at an angle and spun them around as I cleaned the insides of the rims. Seemed to work fine. I still may get an air compressor but I don't think I will be looking for an impact wrench with this new found information.

Thanks again

Cliff - take the money you saved by not buying an impact gun and use it towards a good torque wrench. Money well spent!
