I am putting together my birthday/Christmas wish list to give my family suggestions and have thought about the two way radios for use on cruises, Woodward, and other POA gatherings. I ran a search and read where most people liked the Motorola units, particularly the T289.

My question is two fold - how long do the AA batteries last and do you like the radiois that use throw away AA batteries or radios that have a desk top type charger unit? I haven't seen any that use a plug in powersource for the car.

Thanks

Marty

Marty, I always get more than a long day out of batteries. Problem with rechargeables, you need a couple of sets to have one while the other is charging! Easy to have new batteries in the console. You also want to stay away from voice activated radios...wind noise with top down makes them almost impossible to use. Ear bud and remote microphone are handy add on. Mic clips to your shirt with a push button so you are almost hands free!
10-4 good buddy!

I use Motorola TA280's. I figure about 12 hours of solid use on a set of AA's. I prefer the regular batteries. These radios work great for the cruises

Marty - I use Cobra's with the sub-channels, uses 4 AAA, and I get over 30 hours worth of use out of set of batteries. Also bought ear-bud inline mic.

The 289's are the cats meow, MOTOROLA ia the only way to go, the more you talk the battery you use. The rechargables discharge to quickly.

the Motorola's out perform any other radios 2 to 1, I have listened to many other people with cheaper units and all you get is static.

Cobra's are,,,,,,,,,,never mind, sorry Larry.

MARTY,

Someone told me that you have your name painted on the side of your car like your banner, true or false?

I have audiovox FR-1438

They are about $70 (at walmart)for a pair with recharger stand. They come with rechargable batteries but also can use AAA as emergency back up. (just don't put in charger with standard batteries)

As far as quaility, on trip to Deadwood, I would say they are almost as good as the motorola. Very small so they fit in your pocket when going to the store or other place with the family.

GaryC - I guess like most people who own Prowlers, I enjoy my share of attention when I am out cruising. But, there is absolutely no way I would want my name on the side of my car. It's hard enough telling Rebecca now that it's not my Prowler (with flames) that someone told her was in Deja Vu's parking lot.

I do like my new banner that Dan created, but don't hink I will adding my name on the sides.

Thanks everybody for the input on the radios. We think they will make our POA outings and cruises next year even more enjoyable.

Marty, also handy to have 2 radios-1 for you and 1 for Rebecca...each can participate in conversations (especially with ear bud) and nice to keep track of each other when needed.

Mike - that's the way we were thinking. Found an ad for T289 Motorolas for $29.99 for a PAIR after rebate at Staples. Either my son or daughter is getting them for me so I will have something to look forward to opening.

Thanks for the suggestion.
