Brian Brennan of Street Rodder Mag wrote an editorial (Oct 01) about recent criticism of street rodders. Some legislators are considering laws against old cars--they should be destroyed for safety, and hot rods are being described as too dangerous. He described an organization of more than 500 people with considerable influence on all of us. Among them:-29 have been accused of spousal abuse -7 have been arrested for fraud -19 have been accused of writing bad checks -117 have bankrupted at least two businesses -3 have done time for assault -71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit -14 have been arrested on drug-related charges -8 have been arrested for shoplifting -21 are defendants in lawsuits -84 have been arrested for drunk driving These people are among the 535 members of the US Congress ------------------ Donny & Donna Burnap basic black cat 2000 no bumpers and tgf metalcrafter front & rear borla with stock tips and no baffles ceramic front brakes Donny's one-off zit covers and rear bumperettes

This little bit of "information" has been around since 1999 and every time I see it, I get angry - even more so now! The men and women who comprise the US Congress are the core of our democratic system - they are, however, mere human beings and so exhibit the same flawed behaviors as some of us. None of this should be surprising to anyone but the most naive among us. What is surprising is that so many people willingly circulate the above-cited piece of cheap, inflammatory tripe expecting it to be taken seriously. No names or dates are mentioned, of course, so trying to match individuals with the vague charges levelled in the text would be a fruitless task. In any case that effort would be pointless, for this article is nothing more than a cheap smear. The "information" was taken from a series of articles that appeared in an on-line publication, dated August, 1999, called "Capitol Hill Blue" (whose motto is "Because nobody's life, liberty or property is safe while Congress is in session..." There is no clue as to where one might find the source material on which the "information" is based. Why ruin a good story with pesky facts, after all? Members of Congress are human beings just like the rest of us, and thus they're subject to the same foibles as everyone else. This doesn't mean that we should meekly accept the wrongdoings of some of them as par for the course or turn a blind eye when they break the law, but neither does it mean they aren't entitled to the same considerations and protections as the rest of us -- including the right to be tried in a court of law rather than a court of public opinion. Many of our Congressional representattives are in fact dedicated, hard-working public servants, and tarring them all with the same brush of anonymous, vague accusation does no one any good. The Street Rodder editor should save his efforts for rooting out those who truly breach the public trust instead of wasting time and energy in smearing an institution and everyone who comprises it by passing this cheap bit of scandal-mongering netlore along.

I've seen this passed around for some time also, but tend to think that there's a lot of truth in it but would like to see names mentioned to verify the facts. While our government officials are just like the rest of us , it would seem that those in the position of law making, and governing would be cut from a finer grade of cloth then Joe average. We can only blame ourselves for putting the bad ones into office. All are not bad, But I feel that a good amount are. The saying "power corrupts" certainly fits the bill here. I think one of the biggest benefactors of this terrible attack on the US was Condit. Something stinks real bad around that guy. OMO------------------ Yellow is DCOOLEST

When these people run for Public office they are more open to public scrutiny and criticism than the average person. Anyone running for election or re election should be aware of this. If you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen. When I think of the true criminals pardoned by President Clinton that's when my blood boils. I agree Gary Condit is probably scum as well, but have you noticed that he is being held to a higher accountability than Bill Clinton was. If he did murder the poor girl or had it done then this is just. But all that has been proven so far is that he has committed adultry and mislead authorities by witholding information. Sound familiar? Yet many of his fellow congressman are calling for him to resign. Probably some of the same ones that said Clintons private life had no effect on holding office. So even politicians are held to and hold each other to different levels of scrunity and criticism. JMO------------------

From Brian Brennan's editorial it seemed that his point was not that members of congress are bad, but that they are no different than anyone else. We are all in it together and all of us do our share of dumb stuff. Some people think those of us who drive hot rods are bad people, and I for one think we are like everyone else. How many Prowler owners have driven a car at twice the speed limit? How many have stood before a judge on a charge of exhibition driving?------------------ Donny & Donna Burnap basic black cat 2000 no bumpers and tgf metalcrafter front & rear borla with stock tips and no baffles ceramic front brakes Donny's one-off zit covers and rear bumperettes This message has been edited by catterumpus on 09-17-2001 at 10:45 PM

I'm tired of the law makers protecting us from ourselves. Destroy the old cars for safety!! What kind of safety? Most hot rods are upgraded to beyond the original specs. If it's the speed they want to control, they'll have to address the new cars too. Racing and going fast is in the mind of the driver, not the car.------------------ Yellow is DCOOLEST

Keith- If I remember right, didn't you say something about how a Canadian Kat (presumably a red one) without the ignition limit handled okay at 150 mph?------------------ Donny & Donna Burnap basic black cat 2000 no bumpers and tgf metalcrafter front & rear borla with stock tips and no baffles ceramic front brakes Donny's one-off zit covers and rear bumperettes

Ed - I'm in the same ballpark, never have been called a liberal, ever! I thought CJ knew us? Maybe she needs to take the fire department exam, score the highest grade, and not get the job? She knows we are joking, right? ------------------
