that you can get gasoline after the service station is closed? I presumed that they still had a master power switch for the pump motors that they turned off at night. They don't turn them off. You can use a credit card and get gasoline after the station closes. What will they think of next??? That is something good to know if you tend to travel at night.

Ed, I really find that hard to believe.

Do you have a master key for the locked nozzles?

Gary, they don't lock the nozzles here. I was very skeptical when I was told that you could get fuel after they closed. I had a religious moment tonight when I noticed the bike was WAAAAY below empty on the gauge and I got gas. It took 5 1/4 gal and only holds 5 1/2, I think. Back in the 60's the pumps were turned off inside the bldg. I don't know why that no longer applies.

All stations have pump shut-off switches inside the building. Its possible that the new, credit card accepting pumps will work after hours if no one has turned the power off. I can buy that, but Ed, your two sons are firemen right? Ask them who will turn off the inside power switch, after the station is closed and unattended, someone is pumping gas with credit card acceptance, and a fire errupts? I believe most or all fire codes would likely prevent this situation from happening.

Al- you are right on those 24 hour stations. Most are in Phx, as the thugs, robbers, and young thiefs need somewhere to practice their talents at!

Larry, actually I have 3 sons that are fire fighters. I agree about the fire hazard and that is why I was skeptical. Most fireman love to use that axe so I would imagine it would be no problem going thru a window or door. The tough part might be finding the switch after they get in there. I will have to ask them about that. We have some 24 hour stations but not many in the residential areas, mostly just near the expressways.
I didn't know if this was going to bring out the "where have you been for the past ten years, we all knew that" or the disbelief that is mostly showing up.

Checked with my buddy who was an arson Investigator for years. He stated they have a tip over switch in all the newer pumps. I guess it is a mercury type switch. That still would not prevent someone from driving off with the hose still in the car. I talked to one of my sons who was surprised to hear that it was possible to get gas. He said they do have a cut off switch near the counter. He thought maybe they had an emergency switch near the pump, which I have seen at other stations. He also said that maybe it was just a few stations and possibly no one addressed the scenario, since most people are unaware of the situation.

GREAT Ed - now you have alerted the fire marshall and you will not be able to get gas after hours anymore... way to go!

Cliff, He is RETIRED. My sons are not. I stopped at the gas station this evening. Bob told me that they CANNOT turn off the pumps as the system has to stay pressurized. They do not advertise that you can get gas after hours but he has had as many as 15 customers over night. He asked the fire marshall who advised not to advertise the fact. Kind of like the military, no tell policy, I guess. He said that the only way to activate it is by credit card, so they would know who did it. (If it is not a STOLEN card). He said the newer pumps would all be like that.

it's nice to think that big brother wont mind us pumping gas without someone to protect us from ourselves, but I doubt it. Who's gonna enforce the no smoking rule? I wonder if it's legal to operate a gas station with NO-ONE in attendence? Hey, now I know where to go to feel really free. What's the addy Ed?

Ed - foreign terrorist read this website, and you are now providing a way for them to light up your residential neighborhood. I understand that the Bengals and Reds don't excite the community, but the big fire bomb certainly will. Does the local home owners association know of your plots? When it finally blows, I hope Andy will call it to the attention of everyone in Cinci, that it is Ed Monahan driving up the gas prices afterwards.

I will disavow any knowledge of you or your IM force!

AC, i don't think foreign terrorist are as much of a threat as some of the members. (I won't mention you by name). lol
AL, he needs a VALID credit card, so not to worry.

actually.. they have 24 hour zero employee gas stations here that are either special credit card or prepay only with a card, for truck drivers and such. Also, if you drive off with the pump attached, there is a special break away thing that allows the hose to break off clean without tearing and does not allow for gas to be dispensed beyond what is in the hose ( don't ask how I know this).

They must have improved the technology, Todd. A few years ago I drove off with the nozzle in and it ripped the hose off the pump. Cost me $200, but the service station manager said I was lucky. The year before a guy forgot the nozzle and when he drove off it ripped the entire pump off the cement base--cost him $1000. I wonder how many people have had this kind of experience.
