Re: the Boss 429 (I almost bought a 1970 Boss 429 but instead got a Prowler) I read 429's had O rings and not head gaskets. Can anybody tell me why? The 429 that Ford produced was intended for NASCAR racing and was dropped in a Torino and Mustang. The engine was called the semi-hemi.

Probably to compete with the hemi and other big blocks being made by the competition at the time. Because ford was getting slapped around by the Mopar boys and their Hemi's, so they figured if they put a race car engine in their Muscle car, they'll get some more respect and outsell the competition in the muscle car arena.

Thats my guess

NP & Dan - It also filled a NASCAR requirement that so many of those engined cars be required to be sold or available to the general public. Otherwise, the NASCAR based engine then couldn't be just for the races only. As opposed to today, where they still run carbs. and rear wheel drive.

If the question was why the o-rings instead of head gaskets, it's because they seal better. the o-rings are usually from copper wire and fit into grooves cut into the block or head. Right answer?
