I have a HP Pavilion pentium 3 running microsoft windows 98 with cd writer, DVD player and I cannot get it to do anything.

What type of cd's do I need to copy from compact flash card to cd. I have 700mb CD-R, is this the wrong type to use?

Plus I tried to use DVD player and it said other application running, the only thing running is the screen saver, could this do it?

I'm ready for a rock, Hammer and chisel......

Larry......sorry you are having so much trouble. Have you tried calling HP support? Did you try exiting all your programs and re-booting? I am a long way from being a computer expert, but I do know that sometimes screensavers can cause problems.

Part of my job responsibilities at my last job was to purchse the computers for our office. HP had been the choice for a long time. However, we had some problems with a couple of them and in the process of repairs, I was told that HP tends to be very proprietary in terms of components. Had a floppy drive fail on one of them and I was told by Radio Shack (authorized repair center for HP) that it had to be replaced with an HP drive, that no other drive would fit. Not saying that this has anything to do with your problems, just an FYI.

Hopefully, Vipermad or Dan P or Fred H will be able to help you with this!

When I freaked my my HP I use a sledge hammer, boy did it feel good.

Sorry you are having problems.

You could get a independent advisor to come over but are quite pricey. Or go to a local highschool and grab a geek out of one the computer classes and give him/her a twenty.

Good Luck

WildCat,

My first line of attack would be to check the following;

Step 1. Scroll your mouse to your taskbar "START" button.
Note:Normally on the bottom of you Monitor.

Step 2. In your start menu, scroll to the "Control Panels" button.

Step 3. Double click on your "System" icon.
-This brings up the "System Properties" window.
-Select "Device Manager" folder.
-At this point check for "?" or "!" marks next to any devices shown.
-If none are shown then for now that is a good sign.

Step 4. The next thing is to double check any hardware you might have added which requires available interrupts (IRQ's)
-At times the new hardware you have to add requires you to check you computer for available interrupts. If you set any of these incorrectly, your computer will misbehave.

- To check for available interrupts, go back to your system propeties window and click on properties and click on "check view resources).
-Review at this point if you have any available interrupts. Normally they will be in the 9 - 13 range I believe.

-If all this checks out, my next step would be to remove and reinstall any recent software programs I might have added. I would start out by removing them one at a time and see if my computers behavior changes.

- This will be a pain staking task!

My suspicion is you are either having problems with your (IRQ's) or a new driver (*.DLL) recently installed.

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO FIND OUT IN A HURRY WHETHER YOUR DRIVERS ARE A PROBLEM

Bring up your computer in "SAFE" mode. This will tell the computer to only load the bare essentials. Each computer is different but I believe either Function Button F5 or F2 might do it. These buttons may also kick you into BIOS mode if they are not the ones for "SAFE" mode.

This is some advise ....

Sorry,

You will have to RESTART your computer and when it begins its bootup sequence start tapping the F5 function key. You know it worked because the screen will have SAFE MODE in different corners of your desktop.

At this point try running some of the programs you normally could not work. Keep in mind some of the non default firmware(meaning hardware and software) recently added might not work.

Sorry if all this does not make sense.

Wildcat, Dan knows a million times more than me about computers but I have to tap the F8 key after turning off the computer and restarting it to redo my computer. There are then 6 choices and I have to pick option 6 and type in CD\windows\options\cabs and hit Enter. I then type in SETUP and hit enter. That is my computer's secret code. I need to do it now, as a matter of fact. I lost the sound board AGAIN.

Hey Ed,

Thank you, I now know a million one. I did not know about that one believe it or not.

I will have to try it and check it out...

Learn something new everyday.

Dan, I thought EVERYONE knew more about computers than me, especially you. I am probably doing it wrong and that is why you didn't know about it. It took COMPAQ about 3 tries before they gave me the right instructions. I have my sound board back. I reboot about 3 times a week. Think it is time to get an electrical model instead of this hand cranked deal I have now?

Thanks everyone.

I will have to try your suggestions.

CJ, I have not called support yet because they are not as helpful as the computer experts we have here. They talk in plain english and the help line talks way above my head.

I was hoping to copy me digital photo's for Mike. Guess I miss this one too.
