I bought two Bell radios at Sam's for $ 60. I did not open them yet. Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with Bell radios. They have 14 channel with 28 sub codes. Two radios, 2 headsets, belt pouches a battery charger and 8 rechargable batteries. It claims to have a 2 mile range. Under Bell Equipment it says sonecor.

Sounds like a good deal for the kind with sub channels. I may go check that out. We just have the less expensive kinds with no subs now.

I will be taking a Mot type FRC radio to Deadwood.
However, from our hill country cruise, I noted they
only work well when everyone is grouped in a pack.
When anyone dropped back, or when we waited for someone,
there was a very short range. Thus, I will be also
taking a hand held Cobra CB ($100.00 at truck stop).
It is not much larger than the FRC radio and has a MUCH
longer range. You'all might consider one as well!

ED,

only 28 sub channels?

all the ones I've seen have 34 sub's

They all work on the same frequencies

Some of us will have CB also. I think range of 2 miles is on 2 pikes with nothing in between, more like 1/2 mile is my experience at the cruise I've been on.

ED, Seems like most everyone is using the Motorolas. If they operate on the same frequency, no big deal. If not, you'd just be talking to yourself. Although at your age, thats probably already going on.

Motor's only.

All others are toys.

280 289 models are the better ones.

It is a long time investment, spend the money and get the goods ones, if not make sure you have a map.

Motorola is the ONLY way to go. Their frequency range is awesome and we have NEVER had a problem. Sam's usually carries the Motorola FR50 or FR60, no sub channels, but about 65.00 per set. JOMO

The newest Motorola is the 6200 at 59.95 and 6220 at 69.95 per unit. They have Roger Beep and the 6220 has weather channel. These are the latest and greatest from Motorola. They are small and easy to grip, with a rubbery texture. http://frontpage.erie.net/carol129/T6220.htm

Ed - I use Cobra's 14/38subs. Takes 4AAAs - seems to have longer battery life than the Motorolas. Have a good 1 to 1 1/2 mile range - work well for me with the Motorolas

I've never met anybody with the rechargable type battery kind, that would reccomend them. I think Gary had one, and didn't have anything good to say about it.

Buy the in-line speaker and ear bud with whichever brand you buy. Can hear better when top is down and easier to use. That may be important to old guy like you who is hard of hearing! Best Buy or Fry's Electronics usually have the best prices. JMO

Gary - you are right, that was the Sept. Pinetop-Lakeside cruise last year, when I was using someone else's Motorola unit for the first time. The batteries went dead when we got to Globe, Az.

I bought the Cobra's right before the Grand Canyon cruise, and they worked just perfect. Although I couldn't pick you up on the way to the Grand Canyon, when we were 65 miles ahead of you on the road because you overslept, and missed the 8:00am departure time None of the two-ways have the range to keep in contact with the LATE SLEEPER!!!

I just reread this after Sasquatch posted. I don't know how I missed it after Wildcat mentioned it. The radios I bought have 38 sub channels and not 28. I still did not open them. If you have rechargeable batteries, can you still use regular batteries? They are AAA 1.2 volt batteries. I just checked and regular AAA are 1.5 volts. More feedback needed. Andy, why don't you buy some and let me know if they work and then I will open mine.

Ed, if you have 14 channels with 38 sub-channels, you'll be fine. All the family band radios use the same frequecies as well (as near as I have found investigating them).

The sub-channels are a MUST for events like Woodward where it seems everyone else will be using these radios besides us. The "cheapies" with only the 14 channels and no "subs" get all the transmissions on the particular channel selected. This isn't as much of a problem for events like Deadwood, since there probably won't be anyone else nearby using that particular primary channel. For the few extra bucks, the sub-channels are worth it.

John you are correct...frs frequencies are designated, will match up regardless the manufacturer. Ed big problem with rechargables is what to do while battery pack is charging.
Extra battery pack, charger, outlet, turnaround time...throwaways can be convenient.

thanks for all of the input. I still did not open the package but I saw they have a web site so I looked at them. This particular model is only sold at Sams but it says they are compatible with every other radio, as you all have already pointed out. I talked to Andy and he said it is okay to use regular AAA instead of the rechargables even though there is a slight voltage difference. i can get AAA batteries free, but I didn't know if it was okay to use them. I am not a big fan of CB radios and talking on walkie talkies, I like peace and quiet and listening to rock & roll while I am driving. But I think these will work out fine and they are certainly cheap enough. Maybe I should inquire about a group purchase. lol.
Again, thanks for the responses.
Mike G. where have you been and where are you meeting up with the Cat-a-van? In Indy? Peoria? Are you going thru Canada to take advantage of the currency exchange?

Hi Ed...Just been darn busy. Couple of boys equal 5 soccer games, 8 baseball games, end of school, from last to this weekend...trying my best to not miss any of it. We will be joining you at junction of I-80 and I-74. We would do Canada but I don't recognize any of the faces on their coins! Ed, maybe with your new found sideline business you could do a shirt for this attending Deadwood and Woodward..."The Summer of Deadward!"

MikeG - you might make better time if you stay ahead of the Wolfman. His errant and negligent driving habits, can only slow the group down. And you know, he will be trying to 'hawk' his goods at every fuel and food stop. Once on I -80, GO4IT..........

Mike, I like the Deadward and it rhymes with Edward so now I can work on a jingle for my new found, non-profit business. I have a large banner that says, "stop me if you need Prowler junque" so that I can sell even while in motion. Maybe we will add a drive up window. The possibilites are endless.
I have 4 sons so I remember well the days of 6 basketball games in one afternoon. The baseball games lasted all day if you weren't the first game in the morning. Looking forward to seeing you in just a couple of weeks.
